Daniil Medvedev is yet to win a title for over a year. The Russian has been starved of trophies despite playing good tennis in some tournaments. This season, he hasn’t reached the final of a tournament and recently dropped out of the Top 10. Renowned Russian coach Boris Sobkin believes that the former World No.3 is not happy with his form.
Medvedev’s best run since 2024 was reaching the final of the Australian Open last season. Since then, the 2021 US Open champion has been struggling to play at his peak. His last title came at the 2023 Italian Open. In 2025, he started poorly, losing to 19-year-old Learner Tien in the second round of the Australian Open.
He continued in the same fashion by failing to put his best performance when it mattered the most. The 29-year-old reached the semifinals of the Indian Wells in March but failed to beat Holger Rune. At the Monte Carlo Masters, he played well in his first two matches, but in the Round of 16, he was torn apart by Alex de Minaur.
His performance and results have become worrying, but he has always downplayed it in press conferences. He has always challenged that it doesn’t worry him and that titles will come. Nonetheless, Boris Sobkin disagrees with him claiming that the Russian isn’t happy with his performance.
To what extent can the lack of trophies put pressure on a tennis player of Daniil’s level? In my opinion, it’s not about trophies. It’s clear that the lack of titles doesn’t add joy, but titles don’t come by themselves. Both they and the rating are a consequence of the game. Daniil himself said this, and I’m not revealing America – he plays poorly overall. I can’t say that he plays badly. Many would dream of having the same results as he has this year. But I think he is unhappy with the results. He says this himself, and I have no reason to disagree with him.

Medvedev will hope to bounce back soon and go back on track to winning ways. The Russian tactics on the court have now been outclassed by several top players in the ATP. Perhaps, he needs a change in several aspects of his game.
Daniil Medvedev explains the reason for his loss against Alex de Minaur
Daniil Medvedev’s loss to Alex de Minaur made the second consecutive year he will fail to reach the quarter-finals of the Monte Carlo Masters. The World No.11 couldn’t beat de Minaur’s great, powerful and precise groundstrokes. After the loss, he revealed the reason for a 2-6, 2-6 loss against the Australian.

Alex played a great match. He didn’t give me easy balls, I was looking for an answer, but I didn’t find one. And in such matches you start making mistakes where you shouldn’t make mistakes. I won a lot of such matches, lost a lot. I tried to fight, to turn it around. It didn’t work out at all. I can’t say that I was tired. I recovered normally, yes, the conditions were different, but I can’t say that they had a big impact.

Despite Medvedev’s third round defeat, he could still return to the Top 10 in the ATP rankings after the Monte Carlo. He is currently up two spots to No.9 but four players still alive in the draw could yet overtake him this week.
Daniil Medvedev to take a break after Monte Carlo exit
Daniil Medvedev will take a one-week break after the Monte Carlo as he will not play in any ATP 500 tournament next week. The 29-year-old would use the time away to prepare adequately for the Madrid Open. He will also hope to remain in the Top 10, which will earn him a bye ahead of the ATP 1000 tournament.

However, Medvedev will have to work on several aspects of his game away from tour. The Russian has struggled with confidence against top players on tour this season and has certainly not been at his best on his serves. Against Alex de Minaur, he dropped seven of his eight service games.
He has also not been able to use his forehand properly, which is his major strength. The Russian have had to play with more power and pace, which many players can adapt to easily in the middle of a match.
