“You’re a serial penny pincher,” Reporter RIPS A’s owner John Fisher’s farewell letter on TV calling it ‘a work of fiction’

TV anchor Larry Beil carried out every Oakland Athletics fan’s dream on local news – ripping A’s owner John Fisher’s letter and throwing it away. Throughout the 2024 season, the fans have voiced strong opinions against the move of the MLB team from Oakland Coliseum, but in the end, they failed.

On Tuesday, Fisher posted a statement on social media which was supposedly his farewell letter to the fans for being there for the team. In the letter he wrote that the organization “we tried” their best to make their dreams come true but couldn’t achieve in the end.

These two words alone were enough to enrage the entire fan base and even former player Trevor May and reporter Larry Beil to blast John Fisher over his attempts. Over the year, there was hardly any evidence that showed the sincerity with which the letter was written.

In June even Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao talked about Fisher’s “bad faith of negotiating tactics over arrangements for the team to stay in the city, and how Fisher only met with her once during their several negotiations. Eventually, he accepted a new deal to get a ballpark in Las Vegas and asked the fans to join them as they “move forward on this amazing journey.”

Beil did not mince his words while speaking on TV, calling Fisher “a serial penny pincher” and his letter “a work of fiction.” He frankly said that it is hard for him to balance his anger and sadness to see 57 years of history end on Thursday after Oakland Athletics‘ final game against the Texas Rangers.

You destroyed your family’s great name and legacy because of your cheapness…I would love to see another massive failure by this ownership group and then maybe MLB would force a sale.

Even former A’s pitcher Trevor May ripped John Fisher following his statement release, saying,

With all due respect, which is more than you likely deserve, save it. Be an adult. Get in front of a camera and say it with your chest. Releasing a letter, clearly written by someone else, and including a bunch of names you DEFINITELY do not know, is just disrespectful to those that love the team.

Fisher claimed that while he wanted to do his best and win championships, they always “came up short” and he’s sorry that he could not achieve it. The fan base is both angry and sad to see their favorite team relocate, but they are more enraged by the fact that they’ve seen far more words than any action.

During the news segment, Larry Beil said that they’ve tried to interview John Fisher quite a few times on the relocation and future plans topic, but he always “stay invincible”. He even asked Fisher to at least show up in an interview for the last time in Oakland rather than post an online statement.

Fans shouted out on various social media platforms regarding A’s move to Las Vegas, while many are hoping to see an ownership change and possible relocation back to Oakland for the 2025 series. One fan on X commented, “The worst part about this is that he doesn’t see what he’s doing as wrong.”

Another posted, “Was kinda hoping it was a resignation letter,” while someone else penned, “The fans deserve better than this.” Check out more fan reactions below:

Sadly, over the years Fisher failed to negotiate quality contracts or retain top players in the team. Their biggest contract to date is Eric Chavez’s $66 million deal in 2004. Fisher bought the team in 2005 and even with the MLB market price increase, there were no significant changes found in the organization.

The team has already started the end of an era-game series against the Rangers and has won 5-4. Their last game at the iconic Oakland Coliseum is scheduled to be on Thursday. For the next three seasons, they’ll play in Sacramento at the home of their Triple-A affiliate.
