Facing the Tennessee Titans at home was probably the best chance for Shedeur Sanders and head coach Kevin Stefanski to add to their win total this season. Looking at their remaining schedule, the Cleveland Browns should have felt confident of pulling a victory against the team that has largely been the worst in the league.

It did not start well, as the rookie could not manage a meaningful score in the 1st quarter. But in the 2nd, the Colorado Buffaloes star helped his team score two touchdowns to take the lead by halftime.

Then, after another lackluster 3rd quarter, which included Shedeur Sanders’ 3rd interception of the season, he came back roaring in the 4th quarter to bring his team to within 2 points of tying the game and sending it to overtime.

The Browns lined up for the 2-point conversion, but surprisingly, Kevin Stefanski elected to take his QB off and handed the ball to running back Quinshon Judkins.

The play failed, and the Titans walked away with their second win of the season. When the head coach took to the dais, reporters grilled him over his reasoning for taking Sanders off on what could have been a game-tying score.

Not get into all the specifics, it did not go as we thought it would… Again, it’s a 2-point play. Didn’t come through on our first 2-point play, got to the 2nd 2-point play, we didn’t come through.

Kevin Stefanski replied

It seems his logic was that since Shedeur Sanders could not score in their previous 2-point attempt, Stefanski felt it was better to hand it over to his star rookie running back.

Shannon Sharpe smells something fishy as Kevin Stefanski moves Shedeur Sanders off 2-point scoring attempts

Even in the prior 2-point conversion, instead of trusting his arm, Kevin Stefanski asked Shedeur Sanders to run the ball from a wildcat formation. Then, to do the same in the second attempt, without his QB, led Shannon Sharpe to ask questions.

Browns removing Shedeur constantly on goal 2 go situations and going wildcat needs 2 be studied. Played his butt off and the most important snap. He’s on the SL. That’s bulljive.

The Hall of Famer’s tweet dives into why the Browns head coach would switch to wildcat formations when Sanders was in his passing rhythm. In both those 4th quarter touchdown drives, the 5th round pick had missed all of 3 throws.

Sharpe believes Stefanski should have trusted Sanders’ arm, rather than ask him to use his legs in the first 2-point conversion play. Then, to remove him completely in the second attempt has the former tight end believing something is off.

Shedeur Sanders seemingly defends Kevin Stefanski over failed 2-point attempt

When reporters managed to speak with Shedeur Sanders in the Browns’ media room, one of the questions they asked was if he wished he could have had the ball in his hands during that final 2-point play.

If I’m out there any play, I wish I would always have the ball in my hands, but that’s not what football is… I would never go against what the call was.

Shedeur Sanders told reporters

This reply shows he is somewhere backing up his head coach, as he knows, rookies are not supposed to change plays that are called. He also revealed that the team had practiced those 2-point conversions, but could not execute them in the game.

The 23-year-old is trying to keep it as diplomatic as he can. It was evident to the world that Kevin Stefanski messed up on two plays that could have been the difference between them winning and losing.
