Reports: Kevin Durant Verbally Confirms Spurs Connection

Every NBA offseason seems to have speculation about at least one superstar-level player demanding a change of scenery. It seems that Kevin Durant is primed to be that guy for only the third time in his 18-year NBA career. Durant was traded by the Brooklyn Nets to the Phoenix Suns in 2023 after the breakdown of the Joe Tsai project. He’s not going to be on the move after failure in the desert sun.

The 36-year-old finished the 2024-25 NBA season with imperious numbers that make a top-10 player case for Durant. He averaged 27 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists per game while logging 64% true shooting. This demonstrates that, at least on paper, Durant is more efficient than ever. A breakdown of his scoring by sector on the floor highlights that the past season was his most efficient from midrange.

Kevin Durant retains the ability to be an elite secondary playmaker and someone who can make a difference on the defensive end. He finished the 2024-25 season with one of the league’s best defensive field goal percentages, around 41%. The Slim Reaper was the most consistent defender the Suns had during one of the most disastrous outcomes that a superteam contender has ever had compared to preseason expectations.

Owner Mat Ishbia has been embroiled in some talk of having to sell his stake in the Suns. This is based on unconfirmed reporting about his firm not having the liquid cash to free up their luxury tax bill amount. In the event that this news is untrue, the team still has long been giving telltale signs that its time is up. GM Brian Gregory will now concentrate on finding new homes for both Kevin Durant and Bradley Beal.

Speaking on the Full-Court Press, John Gambadoro attempted to explain how Kevin Durant currently views the trade market:

I do know someone who has been with Kevin Durant recently. And Kevin Durant and this person talked about this first, and that’s why I mentioned the Spurs. Now I don’t wanna say who, but somebody that KD knows and trusts and was talking to KD mentioned the Spurs

What does a Kevin Durant trade offer from the Spurs look like?

The San Antonio Spurs have a variety of proven, desirable trade assets that would tempt the Phoenix Suns. They have the No. 2 pick in this year’s loaded draft class, which they could leverage for the right tier of player. Victor Wembanyama has already given sizeable indications that he’s capable of leading a title charge. The Spurs are expected to do their best to surround him with a competent roster for a playoff run.

In addition to the high pick, the Spurs also have the Hawks’ first-rounder this year and rights to swap future picks with them. They could add on Stephon Castle, who won Rookie of the Year this past season. They also have other young rotation pieces like Devin Vassell and Jeremy Sochan, who could be of interest to Phoenix. All of these pieces are supposedly in play, though Castle and the No. 2 pick are likely untouchable.

The team already has capable help for Wembanyama if it sticks to the core it has. However, adding Kevin Durant, while not as destructive as his signing 9 seasons ago, could still change the landscape of the NBA’s power structure. He is still as unguardable as any player in league history and he could still be the alpha in a team with Wembanyama.
