Reports: Lauri Markkanen on Utah Jazz Trade Block
The NBA teams are on high alert after reports emerged that the Utah Jazz star Lauri Markkanen may be available to sign in a trade deal.

Finishing 17-65 at the end of the season, the Utah Jazz had the worst NBA record last year. Even worse, they did not receive the first pick in the forthcoming NBA Draft despite having the worst record in the league. As a result, they will probably not be able to choose Cooper Flagg, one of the most anticipated prospects in recent memory.
In light of this, it is evident that the Jazz are still in the midst of rebuilding, and a significant trade featuring their star forward, Lauri Markkanen, may hasten that process. NBA podcaster Bill Simmons said that league insiders think Utah is willing to consider trade proposals for Markkanen. This comes as huge news ahead of the NBA Trade market for rival teams.
There’s a belief around the league that the Jazz are open to listening to trade offers for Lauri Markkanen, per @BillSimmons

In addition, Markkanen secured his future with a hefty five-year, $238 million contract last August, igniting doubts about his contribution to the Jazz’s reconstruction. Interestingly, he might be traded to the Detroit Pistons, according to a strong trade scenario that has surfaced. Tobias Harris, Marcus Sasser, Simone Fontecchio, and two important first-round draft selections are sent to the Jazz in this fictitious trade.
The advantages for Utah are obvious: obtaining draft capital and contract expiration may give the team the financial leeway to later seek top talent. The 28-year-old forward signed a maximum extension last summer worth $195.8 million, which keeps him under contract for four more years.
Because of this, he is a desirable trade target for clubs hoping to increase their firepower and contend for the playoffs. Despite playing in just 47 games this season because of injuries, Markkanen averaged 19.0 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per contest. However, any trade deal to acquire the Finnish star won’t be as easy as it looks.
NBA insider proposed another ‘interesting trade idea’ involving the Spurs and Lauri Markkanen
The San Antonio Spurs are currently going through a significant turning point in their history. The Spurs must choose who they will team with Victor Wembanyama just a few weeks before the NBA Draft, as they have two lottery picks. Andy Bailey of Bleacher Report recently suggested a deal that would combine Wembanyama with Lauri Markkanen and send him to the Spurs.
Per Andy Bailey:
San Antonio Spurs receive: Lauri Markkanen
Utah Jazz receive: Harrison Barnes, Devin Vassell, 2025 first-round selection (No. 14), 2029 first-round selection, and 2032 first-round selection swap
Bleacher Report suggested that the Jazz make this trade with the San Antonio Spurs, sending Lauri Markkanen away

Jazz fans, how would you feel about this return for Lauri? pic.twitter.com/6EcwtZpY8F
For the Spurs, this is a heck of a fallback if they aren’t able to land Giannis [Antetokounmpo]. Markkanen’s finishing ability, both as an outside shooter and dunker, would draw tons of attention from Victor Wembanyama.
Andy Bailey wrote
Markkanen was selected with the seventh overall choice in the 2017 NBA Draft, making him a previous lottery pick. After joining the Utah Jazz, Markkanen took a little bit to get rolling, but in 2023, he was voted the NBA’s Most Improved Player and received his first All-Star selection.
Despite this deal being a bit too one-sided for the Jazz, the Spurs will surely benefit with Markkanen and Victor Wembanyama on the court together, if this deal comes to fruition.
The Lakers are reportedly interested in signing Lauri Markkanen from the Jazz
Several possible acquisitions have been connected to the Lakers amid a flurry of trade rumors. One of the most promising of these is Lauri Markkanen of the Utah Jazz. To get the Finnish All-Star, the Lakers may have to give up several players as well as a highly sought-after 2031 first-round choice in a suggested trade.
Would you do this trade if you were the Lakers?

The Lakers have a tactical advantage in lineup diversity thanks to Markkanen’s ability to play multiple forward positions and his potential as a stretch-5. Markkanen’s skill set is a perfect fit for the Lakers’ goals. LeBron James and Luka Doncic‘s star power would be enhanced by their towering statures and scoring prowess, possibly creating a fearsome three.
It will be intriguing to watch where the Jazz star finally lands at the end of the NBA trade market in a few months’ time.
