The National Award Selection Committee handing over their recommendations to the Sports Minster, Kiren Rijiju

Former Indian hockey captain Sardar Singh illustrated his joy on being part of the panel for the National Award Selection Committee. The 34-year-old retired veteran was in the committee alongside the likes of Virendra Sehwag and Deepa Malik.

Sardar took to social media to express his delight for the same.

“Honoured to be a part of the National Sports Award Selection Committee. Was a great experience to be part of this committee amongst senior and experienced sportsperson, journalist friends & officials from SAI.” said Sardar, who is the youngest captain to lead India.

Rijiju receives a final list of recommendation from the committee

Given this ongoing pandemic has made conditions terrible, the ceremony would be held virtually on August 29. Even sports minister Kiren Rijiju took to Twitter to reveal he has received the final list of recommendations from the committee head.

Talking about the candidates, Indian pacer Ishant Sharma, along with 28 others, has been nominated for the Arjuna Award. Atanu Das, Deepika Thakur, Deepak Hooda, Divij Sharan, Mirabai Chanu, Sakshi Malik, 3 Paralympians, shuttlers Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy are also recommended.

Whereas Rohit Sharma, Vinesh Phogat, Manik Batra, Rani Rampal, and Mariyappan Thangavelu have been recommended for the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award.

The winners of the awards would be announced by President Ram Nath Kovind in a virtual ceremony.
