There are just a few records left in tennis for Novak Djokovic to break. He is in Rome for the ATP 1000 Masters event and will start his campaign on May 10th.
Djokovic has now achieved a new milestone. He has spent 200 weeks at No. 1 spot in the ATP Rankings after turning 30. His rival, Rafael Nadal has spent 209 weeks as the top-ranked player in his entire career.
After turning 30, Nadal had spent 68 weeks as No. 1, Roger Federer 25 weeks, and Andy Murray 14 weeks. Combining these numbers gives 107 weeks, which is less than the weeks Djokovic had spent as No. 1.
Federer has retired in 2022, while Nadal, who is struggling to find his form, will try his luck in Rome, maybe for the last time. Murray last featured in this year’s Miami Open.
Djokovic will turn 37 on May 22 and it will be interesting to see if he remains on the top and breaks more records or loses his spot to either Jannik Sinner or Carlos Alcaraz.
Sinner is nursing his hip injury sustained during the Madrid Open and the possibility of him playing French Open looks uncertain. On the other hand, Alcaraz also injured his arm in Madrid. Both the players opted out of the Rome Open.
Paul McNamee praises Novak Djokovic
Former Australian player Paul McNamee is a long-time supporter of Novak Djokovic and recently called the Serb’s achievement a remarkable one. Djokovic turning 37 and still a No. 1 would be considered a big achievement and McNamee lauded the Serb for this record even though he was forced to miss multiple major Grand Slam events during the pandemic.
After all Novak Djokovic has been through, including in my country, which would have broken many athletes, let’s give credit where credit is due… being #1 turning 37 years of age is a remarkable achievement.Paul McNamee wrote on X
Djokovic is not enjoying a great season on the courts as he has yet to win a title. He is hungry to lift more Grand Slam titles and will wait for the Roland Garros to rewrite history.
In the previous Grand Slam event in Australia, he suffered a four-set loss to Jannik Sinner. The Serbian great then played at the Indian Wells Masters and got knocked out of the Round of 32.
After missing the Miami Open, Djokovic lost to Casper Ruud in the Monte Carlo Masters semifinal. He then missed the next two clay-court events in Barcelona and Madrid.
