Since the 2023 playoffs, the Kansas City Chiefs haven’t lost a single game, clinching not only the Vince Lombardi Trophy last season but also being the favorite to win the Super Bowl this season. With an impressive 9-0 record, they are headed for an exciting game against the Buffalo Bills, considered a threat to the Chiefs’ historic three-peat. But not according to Rex Ryan

In a recent appearance on ESPN’s NFL Countdown, the former NFL head coach made an interesting argument about which team stands the best chance of defeating the two-time Super Bowl defending champions this season. Not only did he advocate for the Cincinnati Bengals’ name, but he also expressed strong confidence in Joe Burrow as the biggest threat to the Chiefs’ three-peat pursuit– despite the Bengals’ questionable 4-6 season record.

The discussion began with Cincinnati’s slim chances of securing a playoff spot due to their disappointing 4-6 record. ESPN analyst Ryan then interjected with his perspective, arguing that there is no way Burrow’s team should be excluded from the list of playoff contenders.

How can you not put Joe Burrow in there? I’m gonna tell you why you can, ’cause’ unfortunately, you gotta play defense. They don’t want to see Joe Burrow. I can assure you the Chiefs don’t want to see Joe Burrow.

Ryan was indicating that while the Bengals’ offense is incredibly dangerous led by the star quarterback Burrow and wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase, it’s their defense that has compromised the season for Cincinnati. Otherwise, Cincinnati might be leading before the Chiefs in Super Bowl contention.

Joe Burrow on track for a historic touchdown record despite injury setbacks

Despite Cincinnati’s struggle this season, the Pro Bowler quarterback is on the path to tying with Pro Hall of Famer Kurt Warner in terms of third most games with at least three touchdown passes in the first five seasons of his career. Since entering the league in 2020, Burrow has recorded 20 games with at least three touchdown passes despite being prone to injuries.

At present, he is ranked fifth place in the list which is also shared by the Bills’ star Josh Allen. Hall of Famer Dan Marino is sitting atop the list with 33 three-touchdown games, followed by Patrick Mahomes with 28.

With 26 games, he currently ranks below Warner but with just one more game featuring three or more touchdowns, he could be tied with the Hall of Famer, placing him right behind Mahomes. In his 62 games in the league, he has recorded 121 career touchdowns and he succeeded with at least four more in the upcoming four games, he will become the third fastest player to record 125 TD passes in the history.
