The Dallas Cowboys made noise in the off-season when they hired defensive mastermind Mike Zimmer to replace Dan Quinn. In the process leading up to hiring Zimmer, the Cowboys interviewed multiple candidates, including former New York Jets and Buffalo Bills head coach Rex Ryan.
Ultimately, Jerry Jones decided Mike Zimmer was the best option for the Dallas Cowboys, although his strategies are yet to yield results for the defense. At the time, the reason for Rex Ryan losing out on the role was not clear, but the experienced coach revealed the real reason that Jerry Jones overlooked him on ESPN Radio via USA Today.
Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys could not fulfill Rex Ryan’s financial requirements. Otherwise, the deal was well in place.
The defensive genius is confident that had the Cowboys hired him, his impact in turning the team’s defense around would have been immediately visible.
Dallas Cowboys have not revealed the details of their contract with Mike Zimmer
Rex Ryan did not specify the number he sought from Jerry Jones. But it ought to have been a big one.
In his last contract as the head coach of the Buffalo Bills, Ryan made $27.5 million over five years. That would amount to $5.5 million per year. He is likely to have demanded double the amount per year.
Rex Ryan went on to take a shot at Mike Zimmer right after leading listeners to believe that Jerry Jones was cheap.
Ryan must be a wizard because his words are turning out to be true. Through the first three games of the season, Dallas is quite literally being run over by its opponents. Their run defense has been horrendous this season.
Zimmer’s strategies are not working as the Cowboys have given up 89 points so far, a shocking contradiction to the defensive stronghold that they were considered last season. Maybe Jerry Jones is regretting his decision to hire Mike Zimmer at a discounted price rather than shelling out more money for Rex Ryan.
