“I have achieved my dreams”: Olympic Champion Linoy Ashram announces retirement after spectacular career in rhythmic gymnastics

Olympic Champion Linoy Ashram recently announced her retirement from the sport of rhythmic gymnastics on April 4th, Monday. The Isreal is retiring at the age of 22, after beginning her career in 2015.

The 2020 Tokyo Olympics were a defining moment for Linoy, as she took home the gold medal and became champion in the individual all-around event. In achieving so, she became the first woman from Isreal to win a gold medal at the Olympics, receiving much praise- and also talk about her future.

“Today that my business card says Olympic champion, I know it was worth making this journey,” she said. “An athlete needs to know when to retire. I have fulfilled my dream. I will continue but on the other side,” added Linoy according to olympics.com.

What is next for Linoy Ashram as she announces retirement?

“If I could cut the medal in two, I would give half to (coach) Ayelet Sussman, because part of it (the victory) is hers,” said Ashram about her Olympic title. Linoy added that she would work in Sussman’s coaching team moving ahead.

Linoy is the holder of 11 World Championships medals and four European Games medals including two golds. She became the first Israeli to be crowned European individual all-around champion in 2020. Ashram’s shining moment however came in 2021, where she beat ROC favourites Dina Averina and Arina Averina to clinch the individual all-around title.
