Richard Childress was caught in the crossfire during the 23XI-FRM vs NASCAR charter lawsuit. The NASCAR leaders criticized Childress, even going as far as calling him a ‘stupid redneck’. Now, the RCR team owner has brutally responded to the leaders, showcasing the sponsor letter at a team museum.

The former NASCAR commissioner, Steve Phelps, said in the texts that Richard Childress needed to be “taken out back and flogged”. Understandably, Childress took massive offense to these leaked texts and reassured everyone that he wouldn’t forget the matter easily. Now, the RCR owner has stood true to his words and displayed a crucial letter during the 23XI-FRM vs NASCAR lawsuit in the RCR museum.

Back in December, during the trial, Bass Pro Shops’ CEO Johnny Morris called out Steve Phelps to either be fired or step down. Notably, Morris’ company has maintained great relations with Richard Childress, and they saw the attack on the latter as an attack on them as well. The letter stated how the 80-year-old was criticized despite building and promoting the sport like no one else in history.

This letter was crucial in the NASCAR lawsuit, as the settlement arrived just a few days later. Now, Richard Childress has proudly presented the letter in the newly built RCR museum. Childress showcased the letter to his great friend Johnny Morris on a video call, and understandably, got teary-eyed on the call. RCR posted the interaction on social media and captured the hearts of many fans as well.

Johnny Morris’ letter labeled Richard Childress slander as “a threat to NASCAR’s integrity”

Johnny Morris did not hold back while penning down the letter in support of Richard Childress. Morris claimed that Steve Phelps managed to discredit himself and the sport, not Mr. Childress. The letter also revealed how the governing authorities ignored the demands of the fans and the drivers, who were very crucial to NASCAR’s success.

In the letter, Johnny Morris stated how many teammates raised valid concerns over Steve Phelps’ contempt for Richard Childress. Moreover, Morris claimed that Phelps and his lieutenants did not care about being fair and objective during such times. Ultimately, the letter declared that the entire situation was indeed a threat to the integrity of NASCAR and only did more harm than good for the sport.

The commissioner, in all his rant, has only managed to bring discredit to himself and the sport, Many of our teammates have validly expressed concern that the commissioner’s recently revealed contempt for Richard Childress makes it abundantly clear that he and his lieutenants are not capable of being fair and objective when it comes to impartially enforcing the rules and regulations that govern the sport, including the objective assessment of fines and penalties. This is a threat to the very integrity of the sport.

Johnny Morris’ letter read, as reported by On3.com.

Certainly, the sport suffered from a lot of losses over the final couple of weeks of the 2025 season. However, following the settlement of the case, Steve Phelps was removed from his role as commissioner. Moreover, NASCAR is now actively listening to the people of the sport and not taking rash decisions. Ultimately, it was a win-win for all, and Richard Childress also managed to get his sweet revenge.
