‘My career will finish soon but I still enjoy playing’, says Richard Gasquet
Richard Gasquet
Talk about one of the talented players to have not accomplished much on the tennis circuit over the years, and Richard Gasquet’s name stands out in that list. The Frenchman has arguably been one of the brightest talents since the junior days. Unfortunately, he has not been able to produce the desired results for various reasons on the ATP tour.
The 34-year-old has also been hampered by many injuries. This year, he was also infected with the dreadful Covid-19 disease, but Gasquet is determined to play as many tournaments as possible going ahead.
“I had a lot of injuries, I had COVID-19. It’s been a tough year. I’m happy to be playing and winning again,” Gasquet said.
The former World No.7 is currently playing the Estoril Open in Portugal. He started his campaign in positive fashion by beating Juan Ignacio Londero of Argentina in straight sets yesterday.
Age factor not on Gasquet’s side
While Gasquet is keen on playing more matches, he is also wary of the fact that age is not on his side. Speaking on uncertain times ahead, the World No.52 said, “I turn 35 soon, I had many injuries but I’m still mentally fresh. I know I’m in the end of my career but I still enjoy playing.”
Given the prodigious talent, Gasquet entered the tour with, it is unfortunate that he has not even won a single Masters 1000 event in his career, and has only made the semis of Wimbledon and US Open in the past. He takes on Christian Garin in the round of 16 in Estoril.
