Holger Rune is currently nursing his Achilles tendon after tearing it during the semifinals of last year’s Stockholm Open. Since then, Rune hasn’t competed in any official tournament and is expected to miss the majority of the 2026 season.

Rune is currently doing his rehab in the Aspetar Hospital in Qatar. Former Wimbledon champion Richard Krajicek has one piece of advice for Rune, which he thinks can save the Dane from aggravating his injury. The Dutchman urged him to not rush his comeback.

Maybe my advice would be to stay patient. The biggest mistake I made after being sidelined for 20 months following my elbow surgery was that I came back too quickly. I should have waited at least one more year, at least until I was fully fit. If I could go back in time, I would change it. The stop and start is not good physically or mentally.

Richard Krajicek said during his interview with Bolavip

Krajicek also thinks Rune has it in him to win Majors. Rune has so far reached three Grand Slam quarterfinals: in the 2022 and 2023 French Open, and in the 2023 Wimbledon.

It is not going to be any problem at all for him to come back into the top five and win Grand Slams. He has the level, and of course, it will take a little bit of time, but Holger is an incredible hard worker, so for me, that is not a problem for him at all.

Richard Krajicek added

Rune said the career-threatening injury was a slap in his face, as it taught him to take his career seriously. He also believes the reason behind his injury is playing non-stop tennis due to the packed 11-month calendar.

Last year in the Grand Slam events, Rune made the fourth round of the Australian Open and the French Open. He suffered a first-round exit at Wimbledon and lost in the second round of the US Open.

On the tour overall, Rune played two finals last year. He lost to Jack Draper at the ATP 1000 Indian Wells but beat seven-time Grand Slam champion Carlos Alcaraz at the ATP 500 Barcelona Open.

Holger Rune shares his latest fitness update

Since his surgery, Holger Rune has been regularly providing fitness updates on his social media. He recently took to X and posted a clip of himself strengthening his right leg.

Testing leg strength. Goal is to have almost equal strength at both legs before starting to jump and run to avoid unhealthy competitions. Happy to be back at Aspetar to make sure I progress safely. #comebackloading.

The two finals that he reached last year helped him get back to the top 10 on the rankings table. But he has once again dropped out of the top 10 due to his injury. Rune ended the 2025 season ranked World No.15.

He is on the verge of dropping outside of the top 20, as at present, the former World No.4 sits in the 18th position. As he skipped the Australian Open, he could not defend the 200 points he was awarded after reaching the fourth round last year.

Rune has so far lifted five titles from 11 finals. The last time he won a Big Title was at the 2022 Paris Masters by defeating Novak Djokovic. He has yet to win another Big Title. Since that win, Rune has also played three Masters 1000 finals. Apart from the Indian Wells final, Rune reached two more quarterfinals in Masters 1000s last year (at the Cincinnati Masters and the Shanghai Masters).
