Darling Raceway hosted the 13th Cup race of the 2024 season last Sunday and as usual the highlight of the day was the throwback paint schemes used by the teams to honour the legendary figures of the sport. Kyle Larson’s No:5 cars’ Terry Labonte throwback scheme was the most accurate ones of the day.

Seven times Cup Series champion and NASCAR Hall of Famer Richard Petty was recently asked by a fan about how he really feels about the throwback weekend. He believes that the teams are running out of throwback schemes to do as they have been doing it at Darlington for a really longtime.

The only thing throwback is they just paint the cars a different color. I think they had my dad's '56 Dodge painted. I think '59 Plymouth that I ran down there. You know, everybody's got his own idea. It's one of those deals now; they've done it so long they're running out old paint schemes from way back.
Richard Petty said as response to a fan question.

It’s not just the schemes running out the problem, the sponsorship issues is big as well. Teams are not able to have proper throwbackss without the right sponsors and some drivers are even made to do throwback to their own schemes from the past as well.

My brother and myself and my cousin Dale Inman, we started working on cars when I was 12 or 14 years old...I mean, when I was 16 years old, I drove a car to California, and Daddy raced it, and I drove it back home.
Richard Petty said.

From that day he never had to look back when he strapped in to race in a Cup car as he was always among the front runners because of his racing prowess. The Petty family legacy will always be part of NASCAR history forever.
