Lately, the San Francisco 49ers’ Sunday game has been quite in the discussion– not for their on-field play but for a sideline incident that threw Deebo Samuel in intense scrutiny. While many have criticized the wide receiver, Richard Sherman holds a different perspective on the whole controversy.

The star wide receiver was seen attacking one of his teammates, who came to protect kicker Jake Moody after Samuel blasted over him for missing three kicks. He grabbed long-snapper Taybor Pepper by his throat before pushing him away when he intervened in his heated conversation with Moody.

Although Samuel’s anger towards Moody was justified since he missed three field goals, he overlooked the fact that the kicker had just recovered from a serious injury. Given that, the All-Pro receiver’s aggressive behavior has been deemed unacceptable by all except sports analyst Sherman.

When Deebo Samuel goes up to him and says ‘Lock in’ and apparently that’s what he said, you don’t defend him from that. You don’t get to defend him from accountability from the team. If I give up a touchdown pass and one of my teammates is like ‘Come on. Lock in now.’ Somebody is not gonna come in and save me.

Sherman argued that the players need to toughen up as it’s the National Football League after all. He justified Samuel’s frustration towards Moody, especially given the 49ers’ red-zone struggles which have made their kicking game more crucial.

Kyle Shanahan claimed Taybor Pepper overreacted to Deebo Samuel’s words to Jake Moody

In his defense for the Pro Bowler, Sherman also blamed Pepper for interfering and defending his teammate against accountability. And so believes the Niners’ head coach Kyle Shanahan. He argued that Pepper misinterpreted Samuel’s words for Jake, saying the latter “wasn’t saying anything bad to Jake.”

I like Taybor Pepper’s intentions on it, he’s got his kicker’s back. But I think he kind of interpreted wrong what Deebo was doing to him and overreacted a little bit. And Deebo didn’t like that and got him out of his face, and that’s really about where it ended.

Kyle Shanahan said post-game to the reporters

Amid differing opinions on the appropriateness of Samuel’s actions, the wideout addressed the situation after the game, expressing remorse and clarifying that it was not anything inappropriate to kicker Moody, as long-snapper Pepper had thought.
