Jasprit Bumrah has currently emerged as the best bowler across formats in world cricket. He was at his supreme power in the recently concluded Border-Gavaskar series as he scalped 32 wickets and became the leading wicket-taker of the series. Bumrah was always the thorn in Australia’s path and was single-handedly carrying India’s hopes in the series.
He was not able to bowl in the second innings of the fifth Test match at the Sydney Cricket Ground due to back spasms as India lost that game to lose the series 3-1. The fast bowler has already become the Indian bowler with the most wickets taken on Australian soil (64 wickets at an impressive average of 17.15).
Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting has heaped praise on Bumrah’s performance in the BGT 2024/25 and has called him the standout bowler of the series. He added that Bumrah’s skill has made batting tougher and silly for a quality top order like Australia’s.
Jasprit Bumrah has revealed why he did not bowl in the second innings of the fifth Test match
When India was bowling in the first innings of the fifth Test match in Sydney, Bumrah had a discussion with Kohli and walked back to the pavilion with a stiff back. Kohli took over the captaincy for the rest of the game, and Bumrah went for scans. It was later found out that Bumrah had back spasms. As India set a target of 162 runs for Australia to chase, Bumrah did not bowl, which made the chase much easier for the Aussie batters.
At the post-match presentation, Bumrah expressed his frustration after he was not able to bowl on the spiciest wicket of the series. However, he revealed that he needs to respect his body and can’t fight with it. He talked about how he felt discomfort while bowling the second spell in the first innings.
India’s hopes of qualifying for the WTC final have been dashed, as Australia will now face South Africa at the Lord’s Cricket Ground. Australia also got their hands on the BGT for the first time since 2014/15.
