The curious case of Ricky Starks‘ AEW status continues to bewilder the fans. For the record, he’s not been on their programming since competing on a March 30 taping of AEW Collision this year. As of late, he’s started accepting bookings on the independent circuit. Part of that was his latest appearance at a GCW event in New Jersey. A handsome crowd on hand was there to pop for the 34-year-old wrestler.
When Starks got on the mic, he implicitly reminisced about beating CM Punk to win the 2023 Owen Hart Cup. After that, he alluded to his AEW absence; that’s still an unsolved riddle. Ricky said he’d be damned to continue sitting at home and be frozen out after how passionate he is about this business.
The Absolute One vowed to make amends for his dwindling career that has gone nowhere since Tony Khan‘s promotion decided to take him off TV. A few months ago, it was reported that AEW doesn’t have any long-term plans for Starks. It added that they were of the belief that the dissonant star was just waiting for his contract to expire.

Speaking of which, President Khan confirmed days before the All In pay-per-view that Ricky’s still signed to AEW. Amid growing speculation among the fans, the wrestler-in-question had to step in to clear up a misconception about himself.
A troll on social media tried to justify Ricky’s ongoing AEW woes, claiming that the Louisiana native never made it to the top because he turned down several creative pitches in AEW. Starks, though unrelenting, shot down the false narrative. Ricky’s AEW career highlights include a highly-praised rivalry for the world title with MJF, which the latter eventually won.
Are Ricky Starks and AEW talking following months of breakdown?
In a positive sign, The Absolute One was backstage at last night’s Full Gear PPV. Apart from that, neither him nor AEW have publicly commented about their mutual discord. Bryan Alvarez of WOL recently provided a new bit of information that might help. According to him, the two sides have resumed communicating, although in a very small capacity.
They’d be hoping to get some semblance of resolve. Back when the rumors of Starks jumping ship to WWE amid AEW turmoil were at an all-time high, a report from Fightful asserted that there was significant interest among NXT sources to bring him to the brand.

However, until he’s under an AEW contract, the date of expiration of which is still under wraps, he’d not be legally allowed to quit the company. Ricky has some friends in WWE, including the likes of Cody Rhodes and Jade Cargill, who can certainly help his cause if he were to join the Stamford-based promotion.
