Nina Hughes and Cherneka Johnson fought for the WBA women’s bantamweight belt at RAC Arena
in Perth, Australia. Johnson emerged victorious and bounced back after her last loss against Ellie Scotney. Across the fight, she was able to land several good shots, which eventually led to her majority decision victory. However, during the announcement, there was major confusion about the judges’ scorecards.
The fight was the co-main event at the Vasiliy Lomachenko vs. George Kambosos fight. The announcer was Lt. Dan Hennessey, who is quite well-known for his work. Unfortunately, he made a major blunder while announcing the victor. Hennessey initially announced that Hughes was the winner via a majority decision. This made Hughes quite happy, as she began celebrating inside the ring with her trainer.
Johnson appeared confused because she felt she had done enough to win the fight. However, a few seconds later, the referee brought them back to the center of the ring while Hughes was having her moment. Hennessy then again began reading out the scorecard, which was 95-95, 96-94, and 98-92.
Subsequently, he announced that Johnson won the fight via majority decision instead of Hughes. This means that Hennessy read the scorecard correctly but made a blunder with the name. Hence, Johnson became the new WBA women’s bantamweight champion. In addition, Hughes and the crowd were quite upset because of the announcer’s mistake.
The fight between Nina Hughes and Cherneka Johnson
From the get-go, Johnson capitalized on the size advantage as she used her jab and strength to keep Hughes at bay. In the third round, Hughes took charge, relying on her work during the two-minute rounds to reduce the impact of Johnson’s more powerful shots.
In the fourth round, Hughes attacked creatively, holding Johnson’s head and throwing short punches to her face. Johnson countered with a power right that forced Hughes to the ropes. Furthermore, she continued the attacks that staggered Hughes and left her with a bruise under her right eye.
Johnson was able to land a sharp right in the 8th, but Hughes brushed it off and sent a combination that started her nose bleeding again. In the 9th, Cherneka Johnson tried to keep up with Hughes, and within the first minute, she landed two spinning rights that dropped Hughes. Subsequently, Johnson dominated the 10th with power punching and displayed her superiority.
