IPL 2021: “I’ll apply my learnings from Mahi bhai” – Rishabh Pant speaks on coming up against MS Dhoni in his first match as Delhi Capitals’ captain

Rishabh Pant is all set to take the field for Delhi Capitals (DC) as their captain following his appointment which came as a result of regular skipper Shreyas Iyer‘s shoulder injury that ruled him out of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The injury occurred during India’s ODI series against England which meant that Iyer had to undergo surgery ruling him out which in turn led to the management promoting Pant as captain.

Pant is in scintillating form of late following his heroics for India in the red-ball series against Australia and England. The youngster also made a comeback to the limited-overs set up and shone against England. He will now lead DC in their first match of IPL 2021 against the MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on the 10th of April.

Rishabh Pant spoke in a video posted by the Delhi Capitals’ official twitter handle about going head-to-head against MS Dhoni. “My first match as captain will be against Mahi (MS Dhoni) bhai. It will be a good experience for me as I have learned a lot from him. I have my own experience as a player as well. I’ll apply my own experience and the learnings from MS Dhoni, and try to do something different against CSK,” Pant said.

Pant then thanked the coaching staff for keeping faith in him saying, “I would like to thank all the coaches and the owners for giving me this opportunity and I am looking forward to making most of this opportunity. We haven’t won a title yet and I will try my level best to get a title this year. We’ve been playing nicely as a team from last two-three years and our preparations are going on well. Everyone is giving their 100 per cent and is happy in the team environment, and that’s what you want as a captain.”

Speaking about head coach Ricky Ponting, Pant said, “He (Ricky) has been so amazing for us in the last two-three years. He brings energy to the team and as a player when you see your coach and you’re thinking this is the man from whom you can learn a lot, then nothing is better than that. Hopefully, we will cross the line this year, with the help of Ricky and the whole team.”

The match between Delhi Capitals and Chennai Super Kings takes place on the 10th of April in Mumbai.
