Continuing their winning streak in IPL 2026, the Rajasthan Royals secured a close six-run victory over the Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad. Following the tense finish, RR captain Riyan Parag received praise from both fans and former players for his courageous decision-making.
Batting first, RR raced to a 210-run total, courtesy Dhruv Jurel’s 75-run knock off 42 balls and Yashasvi Jaiswal’s 55 off 36. The 211-run target seemed challenging for the home side at first, especially with the team missing out on the services of captain Shubman Gill. However, a 78-run opening stand between Sai Sudharsan and Kumar Kushagra gave GT a good start, with the left-hander finishing with 73 off 44 balls.
However, Royals spinner Ravi Bishnoi turned the tables around, picking up the four wickets in quick succession. They looked firmly in control, but an unexpected 43-run stand between Kagiso Rabada (23*) and Rashid Khan (24) brought the match close. With 15 required off the last 12 balls, it was Riyan Parag’s decision to make. Despite Jofra Archer going expensive early on, he handed the ball to the Englishman in the penultimate over.

The move proved decisive, as Archer conceded just four runs in the 19th over. With the equation shifting to 11 off the last over, Parag read the situation, and even with the Nandre Burger and Sandeep Sharma available, he opted to go with Tushar Deshpande. The 30-year-old pacer did not disappoint, nailing his yorkers to concede four runs as well in the 20th over, while also picking up the wicket of Rashid Khan.
Former Team India head coach Ravi Shastri was quick to recognize the 24-year-old’s leadership abilities. He took to social media to underline both the quality of the contest, as well as Riyan Parag’s composure and temperament in the end.
Shastri went on to suggest that the young RR captain has ‘b*lls of steel’, while predicting a big future in leadership for him. Legendary Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan also made a tactical analysis of Parag’s bowling changes, pointing to how it shaped the outcome of the game. He wrote on X:
Easily one of the best games in IPL history. Archive this one! Riyan Parag, you have got b*lls of steel and a big future ahead, especially in a leadership role. Outstanding temperament.

Parag also earned praise for his humility at the post-match presser, where he admitted that the decision to swap Archer and Deshpande’s overs was a suggestion from vice-captain Dhruv Jurel. It has prompted analysts to suggest that the 24-year-old is maturing as a leader.
Fans hail Riyan Parag’s ‘ice-cool’ temperament in Rajasthan Royals’ thrilling victory over Gujarat Titans
Rajasthan Royals’ skipper Riyan Parag has been lauded by fans for his temperament in the closing stages of the team’s IPL 2026 league-stage clash against the Gujarat Titans. Parag’s decisions led to RR defending a mere 15 runs in the final two overs of the match.

He has now steered RR to strong wins in both their opening games of the 2026 season, including a stunning eight-win victory over CSK. The praise for Parag is striking, given his appointment as Rajasthan Royals’ full-time captain before the start of the season was significantly criticized by experts and fans alike. At the time, critics had even suggested the all-rounder was given the top role due to favoritism.
Really impressed with Riyan Parag’s leadership here. Big call to decide whether Archer bowls the 19th or the last and he nailed it.

Backed more experienced bowler with high pace in the penultimate over, and it completely shut the game down (just 4 runs). That’s where matches are…
Never thought I’ll see a time where Ravi Shastri posts paid tweets.

Matches like this define a season. High pressure, clutch performances and players stepping up when it matters most.

Silencing doubters, Parag has now given the franchise a brilliant start to the campaign. Fans shared their reactions, with many of them suggesting that this is the reason why Yashavi Jaiswal was snubbed for captaincy. Some others pointed to how Parag effectively delivered under pressure. A few fans also theorized that the right-hander’s true capabilities were not fully utilized before IPL 2024.
And you guys used to criticise Riyan. Now that he is full fledged captain and not under anybody's shadow, you will see the magic. And before IPL 2024, he was sent to bat at #7 where he hardly got any balls to play. It is only now that RR is utilising Riyan well.

He has laid back attitude. I don't think he will be in international ranks
Now we know why he was ahead of jaiswal for rajathan royals

However, a section of fans claimed it to be a ‘fluke’, sharing that Parag only got lucky. Many of the critics pointed towards the young all-rounder’s record as a captain last season, and even went to the extent of blaming Parag as the reason behind Sanju Samson‘s exit.
