Daniil Medvedev enters the Nitto ATP Finals as the 4th seed

Daniil Medvedev will enter the Nitto ATP Finals 2020 as the 4th seed, and this year will be his 2nd appearance in the ATP Finals. The Russian endured a difficult 2020, but managed to end it with a trophy at the Paris Masters. Medvedev defeated Zverev in the finals of the Paris Masters and climbed to World number 4, above Roger Federer. He will be looking forward to continue his momentum and end the season well, with a good run in London.

Disappointing start to the year

Daniil Medvedev started the 2020 season playing for Russia, at the ATP Cup. The Russian managed to win 4 out of his 5 games in the tournament which helped Russian reach the semifinals where they lost to the eventual champions, Serbia. Medvedev lost his tie against Novak Djokovic in a three set match.

Daniil Medvedev entered the Australian Open 2020 with high expectations. However, he faced an early exit as he was defeated by 3 time Grandslam champion, Stan Wawrinka in a 5 set thriller in the fourth round itself. He next played at the Rotterdam Open where he was defeated by Vasek Pospisil in the first round in straight sets. His last tournament before the coronavirus halted the season, was at Open 13, where he lost in the quarterfinals to Gilles Simon, which continued his poor start to 2020.

Daniil Medvedev started his American hard court season at the Cincinnati Masters where he was defeated by Roberto Bautista Agut in the quarterfinals. With the US Open just a few days away and the Russian still struggling with form, it was expected that Medvedev would face an early exit at the Flushing Meadows.

Medvedev, runner up at the US Open 2019, had another great run at the Flushing Meadows in 2020 as he reached the semifinals. Although he would have liked to win his maiden slam, yet the Russian was content with a semifinal appearance after a poor run of form. He lost to Dominic Thiem in straight sets in the last 4, who would later go on to win his maiden major.

1st round exits at the German Open and the French Open

The Russian had a his worst possible nightmare during the clay season as he faced first round exits at both the German Open and the French Open. At the German Open, he was defeated by Ugo Humbert in straight sets but many expected him to do well at the French Open, commencing the very next week.

At the French Open, the Russian suffered a four set defeat to M.Fucsovics, who outplayed him for most of the match. Daniil Medvedev had the entire indoor hard court tournament in front of him, but his current form almost left no hope for a good showing.

Medvedev won the Paris Masters 2020

Daniil Medvedev started his indoor hard court season at the Petersburg Open, his home tournament where he was the top seed and the defending champion. However, he was knocked out in the second round by Reilly Opelka, adding to his misery. The Russian then played at the Vienna Open, where he was playing well until he lost in the quarterfinals to Kevin Anderson in straight sets.

Daniil Medvedev would finally lift his first title of 2020 after he defeated Alexander Zverev in the finals of the Paris Masters. The Russian was consistent through out the tournament, defeating inform players like Diego Schwartzman, Milos Raonic and Alex De Minaur before a three set victory over Zverev in the final.

Medvedev bowed out of the Round robin last year at Nitto ATP Finals

The Russian has only played one edition of the ATP Finals that was last year. He was knocked out in the Round-robin stage after he failed to win any of his three matches. He was defeated by Stefanos Tsitsipas, Rafael Nadal and Alexander Zverev in the round-robin stages to end his first appearance at the ATP Finals with an early exit.

Medvedev is expected to reach the semifinals

Daniil Medvedev hit his top form at almost the right time, prior to the all important Nitto ATP Finals. He will be drawn in a group with either Rafael Nadal or Novak Djokovic. The Russian is expected to have a better tournament compared to last year when he was knocked out in the group stage. Victories against London-bound players, Zverev and Schwartzman will add a lot of confidence and will prove vital at the Nitto ATP Finals. He is expected to reach the semifinals of the event, a much improved performance compared to 2019.
