The disgraced former New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones joined the Indianapolis Colts a few days ago after a short stint with the Minnesota Vikings. As per the contract, the 27-year-old North Carolinian reportedly receives $14 million for a year.
In the initial analysis of the deal, several analysts, including Stephen A. Smith, had commented in favor of the deal. Smith opened a tirade against the New York Giants for the financial turmoil of a contract situation they developed for the player. He also praised Daniel Jones for the one-year deal and advised him to show that he’s worth more as Sam Darnold did last season.
However, it seems that is not the general consensus among the NFL world. Rob Gronkowski, a former New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers tight end, is one of those who is not in favor of the deal.
Speaking on a Dudes on Dudes podcast episode, Rob Gronkowski admitted that he feels off about the new deal. He pointed out that there will be a quarterback scuffle between current starter and young quarterback Anthony Richardson and Daniel Jones in Indianapolis this season. The potentiality of such a situation is not ideal for either the players or the overall team.
I think they overpaid a little bit at this position and it’s the Colts signing Daniel Jones to a one-year $14 million deal. You got Richardson vs. Jones. It’s going to be a QB battle in Indy
Rob Gronkowski said
Gronkowski went on to note that the Indianapolis Colts might have overpaid Daniel Jones if he’s to be a backup among the two. He said that a $5 to $7 million would have been a fair deal in such a scenario. However, he also stated that the deal is fair and correctly paid if Daniel Jones becomes QB1 in coming September.
If Daniel Jones does beat out Richardson, then it’s a fair deal, but if they brought him in to be a backup, I think like a $5 to $6 to $7 million deal would have been more efficient.

Jeremy Fowler thinks Daniel Jones is a great investment
According to Jeremy Fowler, there is a sense of relief within Indianapolis’ front office and among those around the team following Jones’ signing. Additionally, some believe that Jones has a strong chance to compete for and potentially secure the starting role over Richardson, which would also make the $14 million deal fair according to Rob Gronkowski.

Speaking on the “Rich Eisen Show,” Fowler noted that Daniel Jones’ introduction to the team brings some much-needed backup.
They make the Daniel Jones signing happen, and I sense some relief there among some people in Indianapolis that they have more of a backdrop at quarterback if Anthony Richardson doesn’t work out… They feel like they can make it work with Jones, and he very well might earn that job.

Fowler also highlighted that the Colts’ decision to pay Jones $14 million signals their confidence in his potential. He added that the same would suggest that Daniel Jones might start ahead of Anthony Richardson in the next season.
