Over the last few seasons, Major League Baseball has gone through some changes. Several new rules have been implemented by the league as they hope to improve the game. Commissioner Rob Manfred has now spoken about a massive proposal that could change the landscape of the sport.
Recently, the MLB’s top boss had a conversation with Puck Sports Correspondent John Ourand at “The Variety” podcast. During this, he revealed that there is a major ‘buzz‘ among MLB team owners regarding the ‘Golden at-bat‘ rule.
The basic concept of this rule is that teams will be allowed to use their best hitter at one at-bat in a game regardless of where they are in a lineup. So if the Los Angeles Dodgers found themselves down in the game in the bottom of the ninth inning, they might get to throw in Shohei Ohtani for another at bat.
The 66-year-old did clarify on the podcast that this rule is in the conversation-only stage right now.
Rob Manfred says there’s “buzz” around adding the “Golden At-Bat” rule, where a team could choose one at-bat in every game to use its best hitter regardless of where they are in the lineup.

This would be the dumbest rule implementation in the history of professional sports. pic.twitter.com/CNBHyRcOw6
As per Ryan Phillips of Sports Illustrated, the ‘Golden at-bat’ rule could be an absolute mess for scoreboards if it is implemented. It will likely take a few more conversations and testing from here on for this rule to make its way into the big leagues.

It will be interesting to see what the players have to say regarding this new proposal. As of now, the league is focused on testing robot umpires in the 2025 Spring Training and the possible introduction of automated strike zone by the 2026 season.
