In Short
  • The San Antonio Spurs defeated the Los Angeles Lakers 136-108, leading their season series 3-1.
  • Victor Wembanyama scored 40 points in just 26 minutes, breaking Tim Duncan's record for highest-scoring first half by a Spurs player.
  • Lakers GM Rob Pelinka humorously offered a 10-day contract to a streamer if he could guard Wembanyama.

The Los Angeles Lakers and the San Antonio Spurs have clashed four times in the 2025-26 regular season. The Spurs led by Victor Wembanyama came out on top in their latest meeting on Tuesday night and lead 3-1 in head-to-heads this season. It was a convincing 136-108 blowout victory over the Lakers at the Crypto.com Arena.

Victor Wembanyama put on a show in Hollywood with a historic performance as the Lakers had no answers for the Spurs center. The Frenchman’s stunning first-half performance shattered Tim Duncan’s record for the highest-scoring first half by a Spurs player in the play-by-play era with 37 points.

The Frenchman sat out for the majority of the second half. It was his his second 40-point game of the 2025-26 campaign. The 22-year-old ended the night with 40 points, 12 rebounds, and two assists in just 26 minutes. However, it came against a Lakers without the services of Luka Doncic, LeBron James and Austin Reaves.

There has been some criticism towards Lakers’ GM Rob Pelinka for not surrounding Doncic and James with the right players. After trading for Doncic at the trade deadline last season, it is clear that the Slovenian guard remains the focal point of the team as the Lakers prepare themselves for the post-James era.

Pelinka, Doncic, head coach JJ Redick, and other people around the Lakers organization attended the opening event for Lil Luka’s Heartbreak Factory, where the Slovenian superstar interacted with several streamers and internet celebrities.

Internet streamer Nicholas Fasco, who is also famously known as ‘Lacy,’ approached Pelinka to have a conversation while his live stream was still active. Lacy greeted and proceeded with a question for the Lakers GM, “Pleasure to meet you, sir, the name’s Lacy. I was wondering if you could give me a 10-day [contract]?

Pelinka thought about it before asking a question of his own. “Let’s see, could you defend Wemby?” asked the controversial GM. When Fasco confidently responded that he could guard the French All-Star. Pelinka replied, “Well then, you answered your own question.”

Despite the Lakers’ impressive record and are currently placed within the top-six in the Western Conference standings, they are still not viewed as championship contenders this season. Their consecutive losses to the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Spurs highlighted their poor defense against young and athletic teams.

LeBron James ineligible for awards

After missing the first 14 games and a slow start to the season, James has found his top condition once again. The four-time champion has shown no signs of slowing down since turning 41. He is currently averaging 21.8 points, 5.7 rebounds and 6.9 assists in 35 appearances.

James sat out for Tuesday’s game against the Spurs and marks the 18th game that the 41-year-old has missed this season. To qualify for end-of-season awards, NBA players must participate in at least 65 games. With his absence, he becomes ineligible for the All-NBA teams.

While it was unlikely that James would be named for any of the awards and All-NBA selections, his absence puts an end to 21 straight All-NBA selections. James has also been selected for the All-Star Game happening this weekend in Inglewood, California.

Kendrick Perkins on the Lakers’ roster for this season

Despite their impressive record, it is clear that the Lakers have a few cracks in their roster. Hence, it was expected that the Lakers would be active at the trade deadline and bolster their squad with some athletic wing defenders.

Former NBA player and analyst Kendrick Perkins called out the Lakers for not acting like a serious contender on an episode of Get Up.

The Lakers haven’t built out a championship-caliber roster since 2020. And they told you everything they needed to tell us when they made a trade and went and got Luke Kennard, that their focus wasn’t there as far as winning a championship.

Kendrick Perkins said on Get Up

Defense has remained a major concern for the Lakers throughout the season. However, in the end, they just made one trade and acquired Luke Kennard. While Kennard does elevate the Lakers with his three-point shooting, like many players on the Lakers roster, he has little to no defensive reputation.
