It’s clear that Caitlin Clark’s presence has been beneficial for the WNBA. The numbers don’t lie according to Robert Griffin III.

Griffin, who doesn’t want the rivalry between Clark and Angel Reese to become a racial war, posted numbers that proved how much the two players’ involvement in women’s basketball has increased its popularity. This became clear during the recent WNBA All-Star voting.

Last year no player could cross 100,000 fan votes whereas Caitlin Clark shattered that by receiving 700,735 which is a 600% jump. Clark’s Indiana Fever teammate Aliyah Boston bagged the second spot with 618,680 votes. A’Ja Wilson, who was the top dawg last year, saw a massive 533% increase in her voting, receiving 607,300 votes.

According to the rules, fans have 50% of the voting rights in their hands while the other 50% remains with players and media critics. The increase in numbers proves that fans are more interested in the WNBA compared to a year ago, even though RG3 claimed A’Ja Wilson remains the best player in the league.

Caitlin Clark’s impact on the WNBA cannot be ignored

Despite the league being more than 30 years old, it has always faced dwindling viewership due to the lack of general interest in the women’s game. It saw an uptick in the 2010s, but the pandemic limited fans’ attendance at the stadiums, restricting the live coverage on streaming platforms.

However, the emergence of Clark and Reese in the college scene gave hope, which so far seemed to be paying off almost every single game day. The WNBA In June announced that the viewership across ABC, ESPN, ESPN2, and CBS tripled compared to last year. Almost every game is averaging 1.32 million viewers and attendance increased by 17%, which is the most in the last 26 years.

The demand is there, and women’s sports is a valuable investment. We’re encouraged by growing engagement across all our verticals, especially as we welcome new and diverse audiences into our fandom.
WNBA’s chief growth officer Colie Edison revealed

RG3 wants people to leave the unnecessary hate in the back seat and recognize the skill and hardships the women athletes went through to present great basketball. The former Commanders’ quarterback asserted that Clark’s impact on the WNBA was similar that to of Tiger Woods on golf. The 48-year-old made the game a global phenomenon.

The expectation of the All-Star game increased due to fans’ vested interest in Clark and Reese. It’s shaping up to be a highly anticipated matchup.

For the first time, Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese will team up and face the USA team comprised of legendary Diana Taurasi, who famously claimed that the rookies will have a reality check. Mark the date July 20.
