The NFL sustained big losses in week 15. Patrick Mahomes’ and Micah Parsons‘ seasons ended after both players suffered ACL injuries.
With playoff qualification on the line, the Kansas City Chiefs trailed the Los Angeles Chargers by three points in the final two minutes of the game. A desperate Mahomes led a long drive into the Chargers’ half before going down on a non-contact injury.
Scans showed a tear in the knee of the three-time Super Bowl champion. Mahomes underwent surgery in Dallas and began the rehabilitation process so he can recover in time for the start of the next season. Meanwhile, Parsons hurt himself in his attempt to sack the Denver Broncos quarterback, Bo Nix. The medical team later declared that the highest-paid non-quarterback met with the same fate as Mahomes.
Robert Griffin III reacted to both injuries in a recent segment of the Dan Patrick Show. A retired NFL quarterback, now with FOX Sports, suggested that Mahomes and Parsons should skip the 2026 season. Robert Griffin III said:
The number one advice I would give to Micah Parsons and Patrick Mahomes right now is to not play next year… It’s because when they got hurt. They both got hurt in December.

Normally, it takes between nine months to recover from an ACL tear. However, they spend a couple more weeks to become game-ready. Of course, recovery time varies from athlete to athlete. A pass rusher like Parsons might require more time because of the mechanics of his game compared to someone like Mahomes. Regardless, they will be cutting it close to be ready for week one of football.

RG3 is no stranger to experiencing major injuries. He suffered several during his short eight-year stint in the league.

Griffin, a Heisman winner, lit up the league with his dual-threat ability and won the offensive rookie of the year award. However, his season ended prematurely due to an ACL and LCL tear in his right leg. So, he’s in a unique position to speak on the matter.
The 35-year-old noted that some players recovered more quickly than others and were able to play in week one. He was among them. However, he felt the process was rushed by the doctors. Griffin said:
I look at a standpoint, because of my own experience, these guys aren’t me. But I tore my ACL and LCL, the same injury that [Patrick Mahomes] has right now, and I wouldn’t have played in 2013 [in hindsight]… because I wasn’t back to myself yet.
A big part of the modern game is mobility. Teams are always on the lookout for players who don’t shy from using their feet. Mahomes may not be a scrambler like RG3, Michael Vick, or Lamar Jackson, but he is quite good at extending plays with his feet when required.
Despite being a quarterback, Mahomes has the second-most rushing yards (1,118) on the Chiefs roster behind running back Isiah Pacheco (1,641).

Parsons led the Packers with 12.5 sacks, 10 tackles for loss, 2 forced fumbles, and one pass deflection in 14 games. The Chiefs may be out of the playoffs, but the Packers are in the hunt for the NFC’s final wildcard spot. Parsons’ absence could hinder the Packers’ chances.
