Robert Griffin III is no longer part of the ESPN crew—effective immediately. The retired NFL quarterback was shown the door along with colleague Sam Ponder.

The decision to fire Griffin came as a surprise, and when asked, the network said it was due to financial reasons. However, both RG3 and Ponder will pocket their seven-figure salary.

Fans of the channel viewed both Griffin and Ponder as rising stars, outspoken and articulate. Griffin still had two years left on his contract, which he signed three years ago in 2022. Even ESPN’s rivals, FOX and CBS, wanted to sign the one-time Washington Commanders starter.

Social media has wild reactions to ESPN firing Robert Griffin III

It’s perplexing that ESPN would just let RG3 leave so easily because he generates much fan following. There was news that the network had plans to appoint him as one of the announcers for their College Football 2 analyst alongside Sean McDonough last season. However, that did not happen.

According to FOX News, Griffin was losing stock quickly, hence the firing. Fans on social media had much to say about the former Heisman Trophy winner’s release.

RG3 provided a hint that something big was going down with a cheeky video on X. It’s safe to say he already knew the chop was coming.

Earlier this year, he was dropped from “Monday Night Countdown,” a position previously many believed the 34-year-old made his own. However, ESPN announced bringing in Super Bowl-winning center Jason Kelce.

It’s not as if RG3 will not have any suitors. FOX had eyes on him to replace Reggie Bush on its “Big Noon Kickoff” pregame show. They could still make the offer to star alongside another Heisman winner, Mark Ingram II.

Even if RG3 doesn’t find himself as part of a big media house, there’s nothing to worry about for his followers. He has a massive social media presence with more than 2.2 million followers on X. He frequently comments on various subjects, from sports to politics, and some of them even became memes over time.
