FC Barcelona haven’t lost a single game in La Liga this season. The Blaugrana have been so good domestically that they have now racked up 21 points from seven games – a 100% record! Up against Getafe in La Liga on Wednesday (September 25), the club clinched victory thanks to a solitary goal from their No. 9, Robert Lewandowski.
Despite the narrow margin of victory, Barca were in control for 90 minutes. Hansi Flick‘s men had twice as many shots as their opponents (15 compared to 7) and enjoyed 78% of the possession throughout the game. The winning moment came early in the first half when Robert Lewandowski pounced on a loose ball inside the penalty area.
Goalkeeper David Soria failed to clear the ball from a cross, which fell invitingly to the striker. The Pole bagged his seventh goal of the season and Flick couldn’t resist praising the former Bayern Munich star after the match.
Following the win, Barca are now four points clear at the top of the table with rivals Real Madrid close behind in second.
FC Barcelona sign Robert Lewandowski’s former international teammate as Ter Stegen replacement
FC Barcelona were actively on the lookout for goalkeepers following Marc-André ter Stegen‘s season-ending knee injury. The management started weighing its options with the German set to be out for more than seven months.
With the Blaugrana being permitted to only sign players currently out of contract, names like Keylor Navas and Claudio Bravo were thrown into the mix. The latter even stated that he was willing to come out of retirement if the club needed him.
However, the club has opted for another keeper, who also surprisingly came out of retirement. Former Arsenal and Juventus keeper Wojciech Szczesny has reportedly signed with the club. The player had recently confirmed that he’s in contact with Barcelona and that it would be ‘disrespectful’ to his career if he didn’t consider the option.
Szczesny also stated that Barca are one of the best clubs in the world and his coming out of retirement to play for them signifies his claim. FC Barcelona fielded backup goalkeeper Inaki Pena against Getafe. The 25-year-old did well as he kept a clean sheet and made an important save in the opening minutes. Besides Pena, the club also has 20-year-old Ander Astralaga on its books.
