New York Jets HC Robert Saleh praised the San Francisco 49ers as a championship outfit following their Week 1 victory over his team. The Niners secured a 32-19 win against the Jets in Santa Clara, rounding up the first week of the regular season with some good ol’ Monday night football.

The Jets, accompanied by Aaron Rodgers‘ comeback, had one too many mistakes, causing them a heavy loss in the first game of the season. Rodgers, who’s the 22nd QB to play after their 40th birthday, had a poor game overall. The NY Jets held the ball for only 21:20 minutes, the lowest possession time by a Rodgers-led team in any start of his career.

Brock Purdy and his squad took the game by its horns and led eight straight scoring drives – something never happened with the Jets since 1945, as per Elias Sports. Rodgers could only sit on the bench and watch his defense get ripped into shreds by the 49ers offense. The QB, missing minicamp, and none of the starters had some time together in the preseason. This might have added to the unsynced chemistry between the players.

Saleh could only nod and accept his failures at the post-game interviews. Saleh admitted his team was outclassed by a better team and the Jets couldn’t hold a candle to them. Regarding the defense, the coach insisted that he would get that fixed.

That's a championship outfit and they introduced us to some championship football. We'll get that s**t fixed.
Robert Saleh said to reporters in a post game interview

The defense failure is, however, something out of character for the Green and White. Their defense has held fort all during the times when they failed to have a consistent QB. In 2023, they allowed the third-fewest yards per game (292.3) and second-fewest first downs per game (17.5) in the league. But, on Monday night, the Niners picked up 24 first downs and 401 total yards.

Robert Saleh’s day could be numbered if there’s no comeback

After a disappointing loss handed by the Niners, Saleh’s days could be numbered. In his three seasons from 2021-2023 of coaching the Jets, Saleh has had a coaching record of 18-33. Counting today’s loss, the record dips down to 18-34, with a winning percentage of barely 0.346.

It is safe to say that fans aren’t happy with the constant losing records that have been haunting them. Saleh wasn’t able to capitalize on Rodgersreturn and the 49ers missing Christian McCaffrey. He was clearly outcoached by a superior Kyle Shanahan whose squad relentlessly ran a riot on the Jets.

The first Muslim coach in NFL history, Saleh, will have to look for turning a new leaf if he is to keep his seat. Nonetheless, The Jets have the fourth easiest schedule this season and sans the 49ers, there’s a clear-cut path for them. The Jets will play the Tennessee Titans next week, who are also looking for a win after a comeback loss led by the Chicago Bears defense.
