Robert Saleh admits he isn’t overly concerned by Haason Reddick’s absence from training camp

The New York Jets’ newly-signed Haason Reddick has not shown up for the training camp. However, it hasn’t become a concerning issue for head coach Robert Saleh. 

Since being traded to the Jets, the edge rusher has not participated in any of the offseason programs, neither the voluntary OTAs nor the mandatory minicamp. While the Jets have expressed surprise by this move, he had made it clear even before the trade that he wants a contract. In fact, that’s a major reason why he was traded in the first place, as the Philadelphia Eagles knew he was unhappy with his contract.

However, since not getting any offers from the Jets despite the non-participation, Reddick decided to hold out from the training camp. While talking to the media on Wednesday, head coach Saleh addressed the defensive player’s absence because of his contract situation and expressed not being “overly concerned” about it.

He’s a veteran. He’s been with multiple teams, he’s played multiple positions, he’s had success multiple ways. At this point in his career, I’m sure he knows exactly what he needs to do to prepare himself to play football. So, I’m not overly concerned.

Robert Saleh sees opportunity in Haason Reddick’s absence

While head coach Saleh admitted not being too concerned by the veteran linebacker’s absence from all the offseason workouts with the Jets, he said it’s actually a good thing for other players on the defensive line. He believes this way, the younger players will get those reps of Reddick.

There's a bunch of guys on this team that are gonna get reps that they would not have necessarily gotten with him being here. I see more of an opportunity for guys to really work their craft and find ways to get better and force their way onto the football field.

As the Jets haven’t made any official statement other than being shocked by the linebacker’s absence, it cannot be said when will Reddick get his first workout with the team. The Jets’ first preseason game in 2024 will take place on August 10, against the Washington Commanders.
