Ex-Real Madrid and Brazilian legend Roberto Carlos, in a recent interview, shared a memory of the first time he faced Lionel Messi, instantly recognizing the young Argentine’s talent. He had referred to the former Barcelona star as the ‘new Maradona’.
Roberto Carlos recalled Messi’s debut in El Clasico during the 2006-07 La Liga season. Although the young Argentine forward was in the early stages of his career, he delivered an impressive performance against Madrid. Despite Messi’s brilliance, Madrid secured a 2-0 victory. At just 19 years old, Lionel Messi was one of the season’s breakout stars, captivating fans with his exceptional dribbling and play-making skills.
Carlos shared a moment of shock from 2006, as he and his Real Madrid teammate Fabio Cannavaro first faced Messi. After the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner effortlessly dribbled past both of them, the Brazilian quickly realized they were witnessing the birth of a new football legend, labeling him as the ‘new Diego Maradona‘. He foresaw Messi’s future greatness and expressed concern for the next generation of defenders who would have to face him.

Additionally, the former Real Madrid full-back also expressed his gratitude for having played in the same era as Messi. As Carlos had predicted, the Argentine went on to achieve greatness, winning every possible trophy with both his club and country.
