Marseille manager Roberto De Zerbi was full of praise for newly signed forward Mason Greenwood after his stunning Ligue 1 debut. The former Manchester United outcast scored twice in a 5-1 victory over Stade Brestois.
It was a strong start for the young winger, who joined from Manchester United this summer for a €31.6 million transfer fee. Mason Greenwood‘s signing, was however, opposed by fans and the Marseille city mayor, owing to his 2022 arrest and later acquittal in a s*xual assault case. Initially suspended by the club, he spent the previous season on loan at Getafe, where he finished with ten goals and six assists.
Despite controversy, Marseille’s new manager Roberto De Zerbi, trusted Greenwood’s abilities. The youngster paid back with a stellar debut performance. Following the match, the ex-Brighton manager expressed hope that the forward’s strong showing would quiet the media controversy surrounding him. Moreover, he highlighted the Englishman’s exceptional talents, adding that he would be a key player for the team this season.

Mason Greenwood praised for his demeanor after passing up hat-trick opportunity in his Marseille debut
Former Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood received praise on social media for passing up a hat-trick opportunity in his debut for Marseille. Despite his behavior on the pitch, the 22-year-old is still facing backlash following his recent transfer.
Greenwood scored twice in the first half of their 5-1 victory over Brest. In a surprising show of sportsmanship, he gave up the opportunity to complete a hat-trick. He offered his teammate, Elye Wahi to score the penalty instead. Meanwhile, Luis Henrique scored a brace as well, to round up the match.
Meanwhile, Greenwood is expected to make a significant impact in the French league. Some pundits and fans are predicting that the English forward could finish the season as the league’s top goal-scorer.
