Houston Rockets locked in on bringing in Kevin Durant

After the blockbuster trade by the New York Knicks, the Houston Rockets pounced on an opportunity to set themselves up for the future. A future where a certain Kevin Durant joins head coach Ime Udoka‘s fast-rising soon-to-be playoff contenders, all in a bid to push them into NBA title contention.

For that to happen, the Rockets traded with the Brooklyn Nets to get hold of the Phoenix Suns’ first-round draft picks. Something that could tempt the team to make the trade sooner or later.

The Suns might be all in this season under new head coach Mike Budenholzer. However, they know the championship window is closing fast. Kevin Durant is already rumored to be unhappy in Phoenix. Therefore, if their title hopes do get dashed, the Slim Reaper might force his way out.

That is what the Rockets are hoping for when ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski revealed that they traded with the Brooklyn Nets to receive the Suns 2027 first-round pick. They also acquired the rights to swap for the 2025 Suns first-round pick.

Holding two of their first-round picks will naturally put the Rockets in prime position to get hold of Durant. There could be nothing more tempting than the opportunity to get their own first round picks back if the Phoenix Suns decide to retool or rebuild.

If Durant does end up with the Houston Rockets, it will instantly make them a championship favorite. Head coach Ime Udoka is intelligent enough to maximize Durant’s abilities even if he is past his prime.

Kevin Durant could unlock Rockets’ offense

Kevin Durant might be approaching age 36, but no one can question his scoring ability. That is what the Houston Rockets want out of him. They do not need him to defend the perimeter and expend his energy like he is doing with the Suns. For that, they have other players on their roster. However, the very presence of Durant will help the younger teammates push to be better.

If this move were to happen, it could be the dream scenario for the two-time NBA Finals MVP. He will be the de facto leader of a young team who will toe the line he draws. The youngsters will be also primed to break out and be superstars in their own right. This is a situation that will bode well for Durant in his quest to win a third NBA title.

The likes of Alperen Sengun, Jalen Green, and others learning from the 14-time All-Star will help the Rockets develop for the future. Therefore, this trade has multiple implications for the Houston Rockets. A smart move that will help them and Kevin Durant as he approaches the twilight of his career.
