The NASCAR community was expecting a peaceful easter break, with every team taking time to rest and recuperate. But at Spire Motorsports, thing was brewing as they decided to part ways with No:7 Chevy team crew chief Rodney Childers, after just nine races in the 2025 season. It was a mutual decision, as both understood the partnership isn’t working out.
Spire Motorsports is infamous for making bold decision regarding their employees, but no one expected them to go after the 2014 Cup championship winning crew chief. But Rodney Childers isn’t discouraged, unlike some his fans or supporters, as he revealed that he wants to get past the 700-race mark as well as 50 race wins mark, and once again be one of the elite level crew chiefs.
I want to be a crew chief in the Cup Series, like I’ve been. I want to get past 700 races (on my resume). I want to get to that 50-win mark.
Rodney Childers told RACER.
He is looking to get back to working with an elite team and driver, after the stint with Justin Haley at Spire. Since the departure came unexpected, no team is ready to make a move for him as it’s too early in the season, so for the next-six moths Childers will most likely be with his family with the primary objective of getting back to victory lane.
I want to be with a good team and a good driver who can win races. I want that to be clear. I’m looking forward to figuring that out over the next six months and hopefully getting back in victory lane.
Rodney Childers added.

In the same conversation, Childers shared how he really felt about the decision to leave Spire Motorsports. He admitted that the decision to part ways didn’t bother him as much as he expected primary due to the fact that he knew beforehand that things were falling apart for him at the team and the best thing to do was move on.

It doesn’t bother me as badly as I thought it was going to because I didn’t really feel it was working either. It just fell apart. Like I said, they were super good to me while I was there, they’re good people, they have a good race team, it was fun to be in the shop with the truck guys, and I’m going to miss a lot of those guys over there. But overall, it’s time to think about things and move on.
Rodney Childers said.
The comments from the veteran crew chief proves leaving the team behind was the best thing to for him and moving on From Chiders was the right choice for Spire. This bold decision might become the catalyst that is going to make or break the career of both parties involved.
