Atletico Madrid midfielder Rodrigo De Paul aggressively taunted Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz, during a heated Champions League encounter between the two sides. The La Liga side registered an impressive 2-1 comeback win over their German rivals.

The Rojiblancos moved a step closer to qualifying for the knock-out stages of the Champions League, after securing a victory over Bayer Leverkusen. Atletico is now placed fifth on the UCL table, with 15 points from seven matches. Moreover, their recent win came after the club lost its top spot on the La Liga table to city-rivals Real Madrid. It came after a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Leganes.

Atletico was hoping to bounce back, but started the match on the wrong foot. Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapie headed home a 45th minute opener. The home side came out well in the second half. Julian Alvarez struck a 53rd minute equalizer, assisted by Antoine Griezmann. In the dying minutes, Angel Correa assisted Alvarez, who struck the winner. It sparked wild scenes inside the Metropolitano stadium.

Both teams ended the match with just ten men on the pitch. Pablo Barrios and goal-scorer Piero Hincapie were both sent off, with the referee also dishing out six yellow cards. In another heated incident, Atletico midfielder Rodrigo De Paul was seen provoking Leverkusen youngster Florian Wirtz. The Argentine taunted Wirtz, and used an ‘X’ rated slur to remind him of his poor form throughout the match.

Meanwhile, Florian Wirtz was also booked in the 44th minute of the match over an argument with the referee. The defeat left Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso increasingly frustrated, ending their 11-match unbeaten run in all competitions.

Barcelona check on Leverkusen duo Jonathan Tah and Florian Wirtz, as January transfer deadline moves closer

Jonathan Tah has been heavily linked with a move out of Leverkusen on a free transfer next summer. After all, his contract comes to an end. Some reports claim that Barca have even agreed with the German center-back on a pre-transfer deal. It would make him one of the club’s four center-backs, alongside Pau Cubarsi, Ronaldo Araujo and Inigo Martinez.

However, Florian Wirtz’s transfer would not be an easy one. Leverkusen has slapped a massive €130 million price-tag on the 21-year-old midfielder. Barcelona also faces intense competition from arch-rivals Real Madrid, in his signature. It remains to be seen where the German youngster end up in the summer.
