Right after Roger Federer clinched the 2005 US Open by beating Andre Agassi, he hired Tony Godsick as his agent. The partnership became only stronger as time progressed.

Their collaboration led to the formation of the Laver Cup, the eighth edition of which was successfully held in San Francisco and saw Team World deny Team Europe their sixth title. Godsick, during his interview with Andy Roddick‘s Served podcast, recalled meeting the Swiss maestro and his family for the first time.

So when he came over to me and he said, ‘Hey, you know about what’s going on? I might come back to IMG, and I think you’re going to be my agent. Why don’t you come to my room tomorrow at the hotel, and then we’ll talk about it, because there’s a bunch of things we need to talk about. So I said, “Great”.

Last month, Godsick revealed that there could be a new exhibition in the future where both Federer and his longtime arch-rival, Rafael Nadal, would play. Federer became the first player from the legendary Big 3 to call time on his career at the 2022 Laver Cup, followed by Nadal in last year’s Davis Cup.

I got to the hotel, got to their room, and the first thing Mirka said to me was, “Do you want some coffee?” and “I ordered some cookies” and something you know, for you guys to drink, but if you want a cappuccino, let me know. And right from the beginning, I knew these people are so nice.

Roger Federer on what players should do to beat Carlos Alcaraz

Carlos Alcaraz represented Team Europe for the second time at the Laver Cup after making his debut last year and helping his team deny Team World a three-peat. Roger Federer watched Alcaraz’s match against Taylor Fritz, which the American won in straight sets. During an interview with Cracked Racquets, Federer talked about certain ways that could help players beat the Spaniard.

So you always have an extra chance to miss a ball, and that’s kind of a tricky one against him. But I would obviously play very aggressively against him on an indoor court like this, like Taylor did yesterday. Keep coming at him, making him feel uncomfortable, mix it up, come in some.

Alcaraz played the Laver Cup after lifting the US Open for the second time in his career by beating Jannik Sinner. After the Laver Cup, the six-time Grand Slam champion made his debut at the Japan Open, only to end the tournament in his favor by beating Fritz. Alcaraz then chose not to play the Shanghai Open, citing an ankle injury.

His arch-rival Sinner would have narrowed the rankings gap had he won the Shanghai Masters. But the Italian withdrew from the tournament after suffering cramps during his third-round match against Tallon Griekspoor.

Alcaraz next will be participating at the Paris Masters, where last year, Ugo Humbert knocked him out in the fourth round. The 22-year-old has eight Masters 1000 titles to his name, three of which he lifted this year for the first time in his career (Monte Carlo Masters, Italian Open, and the Cincinnati Masters).

At the Paris Masters, Alcaraz has never progressed beyond the quarterfinals, reaching the last eight in 2022. This season, Alcaraz has featured in 10 finals, losing only the Barcelona Open and Wimbledon to Holger Rune and Sinner, respectively. His US Open win helped him reclaim his No.1 ranking for the first time since September 2023.
