The Laver Cup was wrapped up on Sunday (September 22) with Team Europe’s first victory since 2021. John McEnroe‘s team was trailing at first but three dominating performances on the final day took Team Europe to 13 points, all thanks to Carlos Alcaraz‘s victory over Taylor Fritz, the Spaniard’s doubles win with Casper Ruud, and Alexander Zverev‘s thrilling win in the penultimate game of the tournament.

The Laver Cup is the brainchild of Roger Federer and his agent Tony Godsick. They wanted to create a tournament to pay tribute to Rod Laver and find a platform where the legends of the game could meet today’s best players. In a recent interview, Godsick was asked whether there is a possibility of Federer locking horns with Rafael Nadal at the new Santiago Bernabeu for an exhibition match.

Since Roger retired he has not wanted to play another match until he feels physically fit. I think of the record number of spectators they set in South Africa. We like to do great things. If there is the option of beating that record one day, I am sure Roger will consider it.

Godsick added that he likes to work with Nadal’s agent, Carlos Costa, just as the two tennis greats like to work together. Nadal, who is still playing, pulled out of this edition of the Laver Cup a few days before the start of the tournament. Federer played his final match of his career along with Nadal in doubles in the 2022 Laver Cup.

Tony Godsick remembers the iconic Roger Federer-Rafael Nadal moment in 2017 Laver Cup

Rafael Nadal has clashed with Roger Federer in some of the greatest matches in the history of tennis. In the first edition of the Laver Cup in 2017 however, they teamed up for the first time and won the tournament. Tony Godsick was asked about the moment when Federer and Nadal won the doubles match, after which, the latter jumped over the Swiss maestro.

That photo of Nadal jumping in Federer's arms is iconic, like the one in London when they shake hands excitedly or the image of the two of them motivating Zverev at the O2.

Nadal locked horns with Federer 40 times and led 24-16 in their head-to-head encounters. Their last meeting was in the semifinals of the 2019 Wimbledon where Federer registered his 16th win.
