Roger Federer was expected to play in the Dubai ATP 500. Today as the deadline for the entries to the tournament got over, at 6 p.m. CET, a lot of people felt a sense of joy and relief on seeing Federer’s name on the list. Federer will return to the ATP Tour in March, first he will participate in the Doha 250 and from there he will come straight for the Dubai 500 event.

Other star players who will feature in the Dubai 500 event are Dominic Thiem, Kei Nishikori, Denis Shapovalov, Andrey Rublev, Matteo Berrettini

Federer’s long hiatus was due to a knee injury

Federer had played just one tournament in 2020, the Australian Open. At the open he lost to Novak Djokovic in straight sets in the semifinals 7-6 6-4, 6-3. After that he got his right knee operated in February. But as he was about to come back, he needed another follow up operation on that same knee. And that was that, the end of the season for Federer. In the last year though Federer has worked hard on his fitness and is poised to return this march.

Year 2021 is important for Federer as he wants to participate in the Tokyo Olympics, and then play on grass at the Wimbledon. At 39, this will be Federer’s last shot at an Olympic medal or maybe even a Grand Slam.
