Roger Federer featured in exhibitions on the eve of the Australian Open main draw, in what was also his first appearance at Melbourne Park since 2020. After defeating Casper Ruud in a tie-break 7-2, the Swiss maestro played doubles with fellow former World No.1s Andre Agassi, Ash Barty, Lleyton Hewitt, and Pat Rafter in the Battle of the World No.1s on the Rod Laver Arena in front of Laver himself, who did the coin toss.

Lots of photos and clips from Federer’s time in Melbourne have emerged on the internet, and in one of the videos, Federer and his family were spotted getting out of the car outside his hotel. Fans had already gathered there to get a view of the tennis legend, but the 20-time Grand Slam champion shook his head, seemingly urging them not to film his kids.

In the exhibition, Federer paired up with Agassi (who kept roasting him) and Barty and defeated Hewitt and Rafter 2-4, 4-2, 4-2. It was in Melbourne back in 2004 that Federer lifted his career’s second Grand Slam title and went on to win here five more times, last winning in 2018.

The win was historic as it made Federer the first man in the Open Era to reach the 20 Grand Slam singles title tally. Federer called time on his career two years later at the Laver Cup, after playing doubles with Rafael Nadal.

Patrick Mouratoglou on whether Roger Federer would beat Casper Ruud in a full match

Casper Ruud met Roger Federer in just one official match. Back in 2019, they locked horns in the third round of Roland Garros, the result of which ended in the 44-year-old’s favor.

Although Federer won the tie-break in that aforementioned match against the Norwegian ace, Serena Williams‘ former coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, doesn’t think the result would have been the same had they faced each other in a full match.

I’ve always been a huge Federer fan because of the way he plays tennis. I don’t think anyone in the history has played such unbelievable tennis, so to see him play again is just an unbelievable pleasure. He doesn’t lose anything from his tennis, of course. He will never because I think you don’t lose your tennis. Federer, when he’ll be 80 years old, is going to still hit the ball the same way.

Patrick Mouratoglou said on Instagram

There’s uncertainty regarding Ruud’s Australian Open campaign, as he has made it clear that he will be flying back to Norway for the birth of his daughter. Ruud, who is engaged to Maria Galligani, announced last year that they were expecting their first child and have planned to marry after her arrival.

The fans want to make that story that Roger can beat Casper on a tie break. [If] Casper plays full and opens the court, there’s no match. I mean, Federer cannot play. That’s my conviction. This is not reality. You know, one is a high-level player, the other one is an ex-champion but is not practicing every day, tennis, fitness, and is not even close to the level of physical intensity that is necessary to play against a top professional player like Casper.

Patrick Mouratoglou added

Ruud will be squaring off against Mattia Bellucci in the first round, scheduled to be held on Monday (January 19). The three-time Grand Slam finalist has yet to advance to the quarterfinals in the first Major of the season, with his best performance being a fourth-round appearance in 2021.

Last year, his run ended in the second round. The 27-year-old, in fact, failed to reach the third round in the three Majors he played in 2025, skipping the French Open due to injury problems.
