In a recent interview with Top Level Tennis, former world No. 1, Boris Becker has opened up on the vitality of a coach in a player’s career. Further, taking examples like Roger Federer and his coach Severin Luthi, Becker has pointed out how a good coach can impact players’ overall performances.
Becker exemplifies the significance of a coach
Behind every successful player, comes the name of a coach. For instance, Serena Williams and Patrick Mouratoglou, Novak Djokovic and Andre Agassi, Rafael Nadal and Carlos Moya are some phenomenal duos.
Becker himself was coached by greats like Nick Bollettieri, the latter’s academies are attended by aspiring players from across the world even today.
“I want to talk about the role of a coach for a tennis player. I think it’s a little bit underestimated. Me, for one, I have benefited from all the great coaches that I have had. I’ve learnt a lot more with them than without them,” Becker said.
Roger Federer has given due credit to Severin Luthi: Becker
From the beginning of his career, Roger Federer’s coach has been Severin Luthi. He joined Roger when his former coach Peter Carter passed away. In an interview with CNN, Federer also expressed his gratitude towards his late coach.
Roger and his former coach Carter were very close. No wonder the Swiss broke down discussing his late coach. However, he was in good hands with Severin Luthi too. Lüthi is a former player and has coached the Swiss Davis Cup Team for many years. Roger and Luthi began working over a decade ago and 10 grand slams later are still together.
Becker was impressed by the Swiss master, who gave the credit for his monumental performances to his former coach.
