Roger Federer called time on his career at the Laver Cup back in 2022. But he has now confessed that he would have liked to retire even earlier.
Federer joked about it obviously. When he was on the tour, constsant traveling, training, and matches kept him so busy that he couldn’t spend much time with his family. But retirement changed everything and the 43-year-old has no regrets about it. He was at the Masters Tournament (a golf event) in Augusta, during which, he talked about his life after retirement.
I am happily retired, with a lot of energy, rejuvenated. I have taken many trips with my family and my wife, something we have always wanted to do. It has always been our dream to go to places we have already been to, but without training or matches, or to new places, of course. I really enjoy traveling. It’s going quite well. Jokingly, I say I should have retired earlier, then I would have had more time.
Roger Federer told TNT Sports
Federer admitted that post-retirement, it took him a while to get used to not playing tennis anymore and organize his new schedule. At present, Federer said he has everything under his control as retirement has given him ample amount of time to spend his time with his kids.
After retirement, Federer enjoyed traveling to different places in the world. He also kept himself busy with different business ventures and with golf. But Federer has admitted that he has played enough golf and misses tennis a lot as he has hardly played it after retirement. The Swiss maestro has confirmed that he is planning to make a comeback; he won’t be a professional athlete again as he just wants to play exhibition matches.
Federer, in the 2024 Laver Cup, paired up with Rafael Nadal for the doubles match against the American pair of Jack Sock and Frances Tiafoe. The 20-time Grand Slam champion last played an official singles tournament in 2021 at Wimbledon where Hubert Hurkacz ended his campaign in the quarterfinal.
Jim Courier reveals how Roger Federer managed to prolong his career
Roger Federer was part of the tour for nearly 24 years. Four-time Grand Slam champion Jim Courier regrets not having a long career as he hung up his racket 12 years after turning professional.

While talking with Chris O’Gorman for the Questions For Cancer YouTube channel, Courier said players from his generation were exhausted due to the “never-ending calendar“. Courier said the reason why Federer had a long career was because he found a way to manage his hectic schedule.
Federer figured out a hack which was, even though I’m required to play these tournaments, I’m not going to. And they’ll just have to deal with my absence because I want to have a long run here, and he did and I think that’s what [Rafael] Nadal and then [Novak] Djokovic learned to do as well. To manage their careers for longevity in a way that prior generations didn’t.
Jim Courier said
After Federer’s retirement, Nadal followed suit in 2024. Djokovic, who is in his 22nd year of his career, recently got knocked out of his first match of the Monte Carlo Masters.
He is still chasing his 100th title, which will make him the third player in the history of Men’s tennis to reach the 100-title mark following Jimmy Connors and Federer, both of who have lifted 109 and 103 titles, respectively. Djokovic also has a chance to win five more Grand Slam titles than Federer but his constant struggles with injuries has been hampering his progress in those events.
