Roger Federer will make his much-awaited return at Qatar Open on Wednesday as he faces Dan Evans in the second round clash. The Swiss had to undergo two knee surgeries last year and was out on the sidelines ever since his Australian Open semifinal loss against Novak Djokovic last year.
Roger Federer is raring to get back on the court and was in high spirits in his latest training session. A latest video of him has emerged where he greeted his good friend, David Goffin with a hilarious gesture. Federer just entered the court to begin his practice session, and spotted Goffin practicing on the adjacent court. The Swiss said, “David Goffin, Baby,” and the duo exchanged greetings with each other, as well as their other team members.
Roger Federer and David Goffin are in the same half of the draw, and if the duo win their respective quarters, they will clash in the semifinals of the Qatar Open. David Goffin comes into the tournament on high confidence after winning the Montpellier Open a few weeks ago.
Roger Federer aims to preserve good record in Doha
Roger Federer has a good record at the Qatar Open. He has won the title three times in the past, in 2005, 2006 and 2011. He has an overall win-loss record of 26-3 at the tournament. He last played in Doha in 2012 when he had to withdraw just before his semifinal clash due to a back injury.
Earlier, Roger Federer stated that no matter the result this week, he will still be grateful to compete again. He has set his eye on the Wimbledon Championships 2021 and aims to be 100% till then.
“At this moment, let’s see how matches go,” said Federer. “Let’s see how training goes with all the top guys… It is still [a matter of] building up to being stronger, better, fitter, faster and all that stuff. I hope by Wimbledon I am going to be 100 per cent and, from then on, the season really starts for me. Everything until then, lets just see how it goes,” he added.
