John McEnroe, arguably one of the greatest tennis players in the Open Era had an astounding record winning 7 Grand Slam in the singles event and 9 in the doubles and a total of 155 combined titles (77 singles, 78 doubles), the highest men’s combined total in the Open Era.
McEnroe was famous for his volleys and shot-making skills and also his temper on the court often indulging in arguments with the chair umpire and other officials. The former World No.1 has since been involved in the game, playing the Senior Events on the ATP tour and often commentating and giving his opinion as a pundit on shows.
McEnroe has never shied away from voicing his opinions and speaking his heart out. Speaking about Roger Federer, McEnroe said, “He’s the most gifted player that I’ve ever seen in my life. I’ve seen a lot of people play.”
McEnroe was a part of the famous rivalry with Bjorn Borg similar to the ones Federer had with Rafael Nadal and later with Novak Djokovic.

John McEnroe was full of praises for the Swiss Maestro who is chasing his 21st Grand Slam title and go ahead in the race with fellow Big 3 players Nadal(20 titles) and Djokovic(18 titles).
“I’ve seen the (Rod) Lavers, I played against some of the great players – the Samprases, Beckers, Connors’, Borgs. This guy could be the greatest of all time,” McEnroe said.
McEnroe in his later years had lost to Pete Sampras and Andres Agassi, 2 players who were rivals as good as McEnroe and Borg, later faced defeats to the young Federer who was bursting onto the scene.
McEnroe currently coaches the Team World in the Laver Cup, a tournament that features Bjorn Borg as the coach of Team Europe and Federer as the player for Team Europe.
