Roger Federer misses out on Stefan Edberg Sportsmanship Award nomination for the first time since 2002
Roger Federer
Roger Federer, 20 time Grand slam champion is undoubtedly one of the greatest sportsmen of all time who is also known for his exemplary sportsmanship. However, Federer has not been nominated for the Stefan Edberg Sportsmanship Award for the first time after 2002, marking a 17 year old run of being consecutively nominated for the award.
It is only fair that the Swiss maestro has not been nominated for the award as he has been out action since his Australian Open semifinal loss to Novak Djokovic, earlier in January. Federer suffered a knee injury, which kept him out of the season, but he is on course to make a comeback in the 2021 season.
Established in 1977, the award was originally the ATP Sportsmanship Award. It got a new name after it was named after Stefan Edberg in 1996, as Edberg had won the award for the 5th time in 1996.
The Stefan Edberg Award to have a winner apart from Rafael Nadal or Federer?
Roger Federer has won the Stefan Edberg Sportsmanship Award for a record 13 times, whereas Rafael Nadal has 3 awards to his name, behind Edberg himself (5) and Pat Rafter (4). With Roger Federer not being nominated for this year’s award, it will be interesting to see if Nadal claims his 4th award or if we will have a new winner for the first time since 2002.
Since 2003, Roger Federer and Nadal have asserted their domination on the Stefan Edberg Sportsmanship Award due to their sheer attitude and fairness towards the game and other players. Paradorn Srichaphan, won the award in 2002, and it was the last time when neither Rafael Nadal, nor Roger Federer were nominated for the award.
The nominees for the award are decided after voting by all players on tour, from a shortlist which is created. In the absence of Roger Federer, Stan Wawrinka has been nominated for the award this year and will be hoping to clinch his maiden award.
