The Laver Cup is around the corner, and its co-founder, Roger Federer, is in San Francisco, the host city of the eighth edition of the team tournament. The event will run from September 19 to 21 and will see Carlos Alcaraz play for the second consecutive time after he made his debut last year.
On Tuesday, Federer visited the public tennis courts at McLaren Park for the Laver Cup Project Court Unveiling event. The Laver Cup is held in a different city every year, and under the Laver Cup Legacy Project, funds are donated to improve the infrastructure of local tennis courts.
This year, six courts at McLaren Park were renovated. The matches of the Laver Cup in San Francisco will he held at Chase Center.
I was in the Chase Center this morning to see this…to see center court, see some of the guys. It looked really special. I feel very…how do you say? Sad is not the word, but I’m missing out that I can’t play because this is a venue I would have loved to play, and I had a chat with Tim Henman at the hotel later on. So, like this would be an amazing place to, you know, play tennis.
Roger Federer said during the unveiling event
Alcaraz is a part of Team Europe, whose new captain is Yannick Noah. Alexander Zverev, Holger Rune, Casper Ruud, Flavio Cobolli, and Jakub Mensik are also a part of this year. Team World consists of new captain Andre Agassi, while the players are: Taylor Fritz, Reilly Opelka, Joao Fonseca, Francisco Cerundolo, Alex De Minaur, and Alex Michelsen.
So I will miss that, but I will, you know, enjoy it as a fan and then coming out to the public park like this and spend time with kids and inspire them and talk tennis and see what good we’ve done with the Laver Cup coming here, you know, the USTA and the mayor and Mercedes, and you name it everybody…Golden State…has been like an incredible partner from the get-go. They wanted to bring tennis into the Bay Area. So I’m very happy that we are finally here and that I’m back.

Roger Federer plays golf with Carlos Alcaraz in San Francisco
Roger Federer and Carlos Alcaraz are both golf enthusiasts, and as they were in the same city for the same event, it was not surprising that they got together for a round of golf at San Francisco’s Olympic Club. Federer took to his Instagram to share a few pictures.

Welcome to Laver Cup 2025, @carlitosalcrazz- nice work on the golf course. Hope you packed your tennis rackets.

Last year at the Laver Cup, Alcaraz’s win over Taylor Fritz earned his team 13 points as they denied Team World a three-peat. The Spaniard so far has played four matches in the tournament, winning three. In singles, he remains undefeated: beat Ben Shelton and Fritz. He won one doubles match with Casper Ruud (beat the team of Shelton and Frances Tiafoe) and lost one with Alexander Zverev against the pair of Fritz and Shelton.
Laver Cup is Alcaraz’s first tournament since his sixth Grand Slam win at the US Open. He went past arch-rival Jannik Sinner in four sets, winning his seventh title of the season.
After the Laver Cup, Alcaraz will be making his debut at the 2025 Japan Open. He chose not to defend his China Open title; he defeated Sinner in a thrilling final last year. Sinner will be in Beijing next week. After Tokyo, Alcaraz’s next destination will be Shanghai for the ATP 1000 tournament.
