Swiss tennis icon Roger Federer has not been in the news on the ATP tour since he retired at the Laver Cup in 2022. He is now set to return to the spotlight in this year’s edition. The 20-time Grand Slam champion has made the odd appearance in multiple tournaments, including the US Open, where he made an appearance a few weeks ago.
Federer also revealed that he is willing to unite with Carlos Alcaraz in Berlin. The Spaniard arrived on the tennis spectrum shortly after the retirement of the Swiss tennis legend. Alcaraz will be making his debut at the Laver Cup this year, as he will represent Team Europe.
Federer retired in September 2022, just a few weeks after Alcaraz won his maiden Grand Slam title at the US Open and also became World No.1. Ever since the Spaniard blasted onto the scene and started winning the big tournaments, he’s been compared to the Swiss Maestro.
I barely know Carlos Alcaraz so I’m really excited to see him play for the very first time. I only practised once with him at Wimbledon when he was still a junior, and then the next day, my coach said, ‘Do you want to warm up with him again?’ and I said, ‘No, it’s okay, I’d rather warm up with his coach, who was my generation, Juan Carlos Ferrero.’ I can apologize to Carlos this week!Roger Federer said in Laver Cup’s website
Federer and Alcaraz have only played against each other on the practice courts of Wimbledon in 2019. However, the 20-time Grand Slam champion has played a handful of matches against Alcaraz’s coach, Juan Carlos Ferrero.
Roger Federer shares his take on the evolution of the Laver Cup
20-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer has spoken about the evolution of the Laver Cup on the tournament’s website. The team event has been in the spotlight ever since its introduction to the ATP tour in 2017.

There was a lot of uncertainty at the very beginning when we started seven years ago. Was everything going to go according to plan? Were people going to show up? Did they like the product? Were the players going to show up? Being a player myself and also an organizer and trying to come up with a concept — it was quite the trip.Roger Federer said
Federer was the most high-profile player at the event since its debut on the ATP tour in 2017. The Swiss Maestro led Team Europe to three consecutive titles from 2017 to 2019.
It’s like a brotherhood getting together, paying tribute to the past generation, bringing in the new generation and then morphing it together Ryder Cup-style and coming up with a concept that would work throughout a weekend.Roger Federer added
The 2020 event was suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The 2021 event was the first tournament without Federer, but the 43-year-old made an appearance at the event. He was seen on crutches after undergoing a knee operation following an injury at Wimbledon. However, it didn’t affect Team Europe, as they won four Laver Cups in a row.
In 2022, Federer retired after playing doubles with Rafael Nadal on the opening day. Matteo Berrettini replaced him, as Federer was unable to compete in singles. With Nadal withdrawing from the event due to personal reasons, Team World took full advantage and won their first Laver Cup.
