The PTPA led by Djokovic, do not have the support of Roger and Rafa
Somewhere around late August, World No.1 Novak Djokovic along with Canada’s Vasek Pospisil co-founded a new union for the players on the tour, the PTPA (Professional Tennis Players’ Association).
A few days back, Djokovic and Pospisil resigned from the Council in August after forming the PTPA because of a new rule brought up by the ATP overnight which barred any other player who was part of a parallel association – from being part of the ATP Player Council.
When the PTPA was launched back in August, both Federer and Nadal posted messages on social media expressing their concerns over the issue regarding the formation of a different union altogether.
“The world is living a difficult and complicated situation. I personally believe these are times to be calm and work all of us together in the same direction. It is time for unity, not for separation,” Nadal tweeted.
Nodding yes with Rafa, the Swiss ace Federer also showed his solidarity with the ATP Council of which he has been a part of since as long as he can remember.
“I agree with Rafael Nadal. These are uncertain and challenging times, but I believe it’s critical for us to stand united as players, and as a sport, to pave the best way forward,” Federer tweeted.
The Swiss and the Spaniard have had a rapport with the ATP Council so it’s not doubted that the two greats would not stand behind the body in support. However, it remains to be seen how they manage any potential conflicts with the third member of the Big 3 – Novak Djokovic over the coming year and a half.
