Andy Murray’s strength and conditioning coach, Matt Little has been working with the Brit for over 12 years. He recently elaborated on the importance of Federer’s particular skill set and how that allowed the 39-year-old to have the injury-free career that he’s had.

Matt is well-informed about the training aspects of several top-tier players, one of whom is Roger Federer. Hence, during his appearance on the podcast with ATP Tennis Radio, Matt elaborated on Federer’s world-class movement.

In the same vein, the Brit believes that Federer’s efficiency in moving around the court ensures that his bones and muscles suffer considerably less stress than normal.

He stated, “Roger is also an incredibly smooth mover. So, he’s very efficient in the way he moves. It looks like there is very little impact going through his body because he glides so gracefully around the court.”

Roger Federer’s lower heart-rate would help him, more so than Murray or Nadal

Heart-rates point towards the recovery speed of players in-between points. Subsequently, The lower the heart rate, better is the recovery speed. Then, Little pin-pointed this engrained aspect in Federer’s game as well. 

Additionally, he surmised that Federer could be amongst the players to have lower heart-rates, unlike Andy Murray or Rafael Nadal. 

“I would think Roger would be at the lower end of the scale more often in terms of high heart rates and in terms of high impact forces. It’s just the way he plays. Versus Andy and Rafa,” he added.

How Roger Federer’s Better Scheduling Aids Him

The Olympic gold medalist is known to put a lot of thought into choosing the tournaments he’ll participate in at the onset of a new year. Further, Murray’s coach praised this very decision-making done by Federer and his team.

Moreover, Little believes that correct scheduling and timely-recovery aids a player to be more successful in the long-run. Likewise, he commended Federer’s scheduling and said, “There’s been some good decision making in terms of scheduling, in terms of practice. All of those decisions have a huge impact on a player’s health and long term success and longevity.”
