Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal spent nearly twenty years as both rivals and icons of the sport. Their matches were fierce but always marked by respect, elevating tennis to historic levels. Now that both have retired, their bond has grown into a genuine friendship built on admiration and shared legacy.
Recently, Federer hinted that their partnership may not be over. Instead of returning to the court, the Swiss great suggested that he and Nadal could collaborate on a new project, possibly a tour for veteran players. The idea has sparked excitement among fans eager to see the legends involved in the sport in fresh ways. Federer said in an interview on CNBC:
Yeah, why not? I love Rafa. I’ve been playing a lot so I’m trying to keep in good shape. I know that Rafa is also totally open to play some tennis. It sounds terrible, seniors tennis, to us, but maybe we can create a tour, like a Fedal tour.
This discussion comes just before the 2025 Laver Cup, an event Federer co-founded. The tournament heads to San Francisco, where Team Europe will face Team World once again. Carlos Alcaraz leads Europe as the new world No. 1 after his U.S. Open victory, while Taylor Fritz anchors the World team.
This year’s edition introduces new leadership, with Yannick Noah and Andre Agassi stepping in as captains, joined by Tim Henman and Patrick Rafter as vice captains. Team Europe includes Alcaraz, Alexander Zverev, Holger Rune, Casper Ruud, Jakub Mensik, and Flavio Cobolli, with Tomas Machac as alternate.
Team World brings Fritz, Alex de Minaur, Francisco Cerundolo, Alex Michelsen, Joao Fonseca, and Reilly Opelka, with Jenson Brooksby as alternate. Several players, including Rune, Mensik, Cobolli, Michelsen, and Fonseca, will make their Laver Cup debut.
Carlos Alcaraz teams up with Roger Federer on the Golf course
Carlos Alcaraz recently shared a lighthearted moment with Roger Federer, joining the Swiss legend for a round of golf. The outing drew attention not only for the star pairing but also for Alcaraz’s striking new look. After his much-discussed US Open haircut mishap, the world No. 1 appeared with a platinum blonde style.

Federer, who co-founded the Laver Cup, welcomed the 22-year-old Spaniard through Instagram, posting photos from their golf day together. Both players were dressed in golf attire, smiling and enjoying their time off the tennis court. The images quickly caught the eye of fans worldwide.
What stood out most was Alcaraz’s new hairstyle, which sparked plenty of reactions online. Many fans compared the duo to a father and son, delighted to see two generations of tennis excellence sharing such a relaxed moment.
The timing of their meeting builds excitement for the upcoming Laver Cup, which begins on September 19, 2025. The event will once again pit Team Europe against Team World in an indoor hard court showdown, continuing the tradition Federer helped establish.
Roger Federer returns to the Laver Cup
In San Francisco, six newly resurfaced public tennis courts have opened at John McLaren Park thanks to a unique partnership. The project brings together Roger Federer, Mercedes-Benz, and the Laver Cup, showing how sport and business can combine to create lasting community impact.

This initiative is part of Neon Legacy, a program launched in 2021 by Federer and Mercedes-Benz. Its goal is to expand access to tennis while leaving a permanent legacy in each Laver Cup host city. Previous efforts in London, Vancouver, and Berlin have followed the same model, and now San Francisco joins that growing list.
The ribbon-cutting event featured Federer, Laver Cup captain Yannick Noah, San Francisco mayor Daniel Lurie, and other local leaders. Children from community tennis programs also took part. The courts are designed to inspire young players, reduce barriers to entry, and provide a space for future programs.
For Mercedes-Benz, the project represents a chance to connect with communities while continuing its tradition of supporting the Laver Cup with G-Class SUVs and shuttle fleets.
With the eighth edition of the Laver Cup taking place at Chase Center from September 19 to 21, the spotlight is firmly on the city. While Federer’s presence has brought global attention to the project, the real legacy lies in the long-term improvements to San Francisco’s public tennis facilities, which will serve local families for years to come.
