In a recent interview with Vogue, Roger Federer spoke about what was arguably his breakthrough match, one that propelled him to the great heights in the game. In 2001, Federer played on the centre court of Wimbledon for the first time in his career and it was against his idol and then world no.1, Pete Sampras.

The Swiss Maestro believes it was his greatest match ever as he knocked Sampras out in five long sets, 7-6(7), 5-7, 6-4, 6-7(2), 7-5, in the fourth round. He lost the next round in four sets to Tim Henman. Following that, he established himself as the greatest grass court player ever and won a record eight Wimbledon titles. Roger Federer‘s match against Sampras and the confidence that gave him may have marked the beginning of his incredible journey.

That match against Sampras is my favorite match of all time. It all came together. He was my hero at the time, and it was the first and only time I played Sampras. It was the first time I played on Centre Court at Wimbledon, and it ended in five sets. There was so much going on in my head, it was a fairy tale.
Roger Federer told Vogue

That Wimbledon also saw another historic match in the final where Novak Djokovic‘s former coach, Goran Ivanisevic, finally captured his sole Grand Slam title after several setbacks and heartbreaking losses in several finals.

Roger Federer reveals surprising details about the inception of his new line of rackets

In a new video released by Wilson, Federer spoke about how the racket was originally supposed to be one with which he would have ended his career.

Obviously the racket was supposed to be built for my end of career, for when you're more concerned about your next match, your next opponent.
Roger Federer said

He revealed that he had a trial scheduled for testing the rackets. However, unfortunately, he had to retire before he got the chance to do so and compete with the final product.

In case you missed it!
